my mechanic beleives ive got the wrong needles in my 1½" carby... this might be a srupid question as i dont know much about them... but what needle is it supposed to have...

you dont say what motor or carb you have, whether there is any head work or if you have extractors and or an exhaust

single hs4 carb =
std 998 normal mix = red spring, AC needle
std 998 rich mix = red spring, M1 needle

rover A+ Sereis 998 engine.. stock standard to what i know...

3-1 LCB Exhaust with an RC40 Box

and id assume its set to normal mix

i wouldnt assume anything, remember the lead thing?
take the needle out of the carb and show us what it is

Wat needle do i need is like asking how long is a piece of string, is there life on other planets, wats the meaining of life..... and so on!

well like i said... i dont know much about these things...

and as for checking.. ill have to do so at another stage as i dont want to fiddle sticks the car up since its running now...

What air filter is on the motor?

If this is standard and clean, and the rest of the motor is standard, refer to a rover manual to give you the needle and spring specs, for that model carb and engine combo.

This will be as close as you could guess without a proper tune up ideally with a dyno.

Is the carby a HIF38 (if its a A plus) or a HS4
Post that photo of your engine bay again and we will know which carby it is.

But yes the others are right - you can't just speculate on what needle to use. An educated guess gets you a starting point and from there on it its swapping needles and using either a colour tune or exhaust analyser (lower cost) or a dyno (higher cost) till you get the right needle to suit your particular engine.

Two supposedly identical motors side by may need quite different needles to run correctly.

Dont play with mixtures or needles if you are not comfortable analysing the results as making it too lean (too much air / not enough petrol) will make the combustion chamber temperatures too high and it could burn pistons etc. Its an easy job for someone who has the equipment and experience though.

HS4... came off my old clubby... i was thinking just buy another one... i mean ive never had this problem before...

like i said to you before, buying another carb is not the solution, because you will have to fiddle with the needle on that carb also.

it shouldnt be hard to sort the needle on your car, as your motor is standard, and the only mods are the exhaust/headers, so a slightly richer needle perhaps

the best bet is to take it to a mini place, it wont cost very much

where do you suggest ? as a tune at brickworx is $200
