Post subject:  first motion shaft bearing removal
having trouble removing the bearing "cover" so to speak from the flywheel housing.
have gone to repco/supercheap etc looking for a puller that could be of use but couldnt find anything.
is there a special tool i need to get it out? it is the only thing stopping me from getting the car back on the road

I am happy to help you but I am a little confused as to what you are referring to ???

Can you tell what parts you have already removed to get to the "bearing cover" and what it is that you are trying to replace.

its the roller bearing the goes into the flywheel housing.
my description is bad i know ill get a picture when im in the garage next

I know, the idler bearing in the side cover case itself.

Firstly remove the circlip.

Now on mine it was a BIAAATCH to remove, would not budge even with the right puller tools. What we ended up doing was welding a bolt to it and heating up the flywheel housing and slide hammered to get it off...

Sorry but don't have much more advice other than it's a bastard of a thing...

I took mine to a mini place and had them take it out.Even with the proper tool they still had trouble and had to heat it up a bit so I'm glad I didn't attempt to take it out myself.

You mean it doesn't come out like the manual says :shock: They say just heat the outside of the cover over the bearing with a blow touch and tap it few sharp blows with a hammer and it just falls out :?

It might have when the mini's first left the factory , but not after 30 or 40 years of work ... I wonder if anyone in the design team ever envisaged the design to be still going after so long ...

A pencil grinder works for me. Carefully grind the bearing away down one side and collapse it in on itself.

I take a 3/8" x 3-1/2" long bolt, sit its head inside the needle bearing and give it 6 or 8 MIG tack welds.
Then I put an 850 diff drive flange over it, fit a thick flat washer and nut, and wind the sucker out.
Takes me about 10 mins. Never welded a case yet.:wink:
I'm such a cheapskate, I cut the bearing off the bolt, keep bolt for next time...... :lol: 8)

I do exactly the same to get the 1st motion shaft's outrigger bearing ring out, but this time the bolt has a suitable sized thick flat washer welded to it.
