Nick
I built myself a very quick motor for my mini. its a 1310 with all the etc bits and i have a HIF44 carby on it. I know its not jetted right - i can feel it but mostly the car runs and drives well enough. I dont go far or fast in it as a result.

I know it needs a session on a dyno with someone who has sets of SU needles they can swap and change until the find an optiminal needle.

Like you - I am a pensioner - the greater amount of my income comes from a DVA pension. Also living on a farm and breeding lambs to pay out the morgage means that what money we have has to be reasoned and frankly money spend on hobby cars is hard to justify. Particualry when a dyno session is going give very little change out of $500.

But you and I have to face realities and the $200 quoted by your mechanic for a good tune is not expensive considering what its going to save you in the long run. But you can't just go puddlng in the dark swapping carbys and needles hoping for a miracle cure - its not going to work.

I know its frustrating and you have worked long and hard getting your car to where it is. Put the other carby back on - drive it sparingly until you can have the money for a proper tune.

I am not being critical - I am just trying to be objective.

why did u go buy another carby :?:
people told u wat u had to do if u wanted to do it urself
u could have saved that up for the price off tuning it and get a person who knows the workin off the carby to muck around wid it so instead off payin eg $50 for a carby u could have payed $10-$20 if u wanted to be botherd reading up on how the SU carby works  it wil save u money in the long run knowing how they work
