Post subject:  Rear windscreens NLA New?

Hi guys,

The matic is nearly complete, one of the last things for us to do is install windscreens (front and rear). Ive done this before but decided this time to take the easy way out and get windscreens obrien in to do it.

They sound like they know what they're doing etc. But have told me that rear windscreens are no longer available new, and he will have to source a good second hand one.

Is this true? are they really NLA? if so does anyone know of any New Old Stock? I guess back screens wouldnt really get broken/marked all that much.

One other question, I have seen quite a few minis with chrome locking strips, which i think looks good. Is this actually a locking strip in it self, or is it just a thin strip that sits over the normal rubber locking strip?

ie. when ordering the rubbers do i need to specify chrome locking strip or can i just put this on later myself?

i hope some of that makes sense, had a bit to much caffiene today

Not sure about rear screens being still made but there are heaps floating around wreckers, mini shops ect. The locking strip is cromed it self so make sure you ask for that one. I think for both the front and rear screen rubbers and locking strip set me back $150, and to install windows was $120 for the 2.

O'briens has it by the roll and just cut it to size.

They have one-piece Front windscreen H-rubbers. Rear windscreen H-rubber is cut to size.

But if ya dont like the locking strip idea, ya can get self-locking rubber.

The chrome locking strip is just a piece of clear plastic with a sort of foil in it. One thing you should know is that if it's gonna be parked in the sun, it will discolour and fade in a few months. Will cost ya about 20 bucks a window to have replaced.

yea chrome locking strip was $2 per meter for me. Rubbers were $33 each.

Chrome locking strip is harder than the black type locking strip. I hear it is harder to fit as well.

Rear screens should be easy to come by second hand, but I have not heard of any NOS rear screens.

Getting a pro to fit your screens is probably a good idea, even though it is not really that hard.

Nope not hard at all.

I'd be happy to fit everyone's windows to get other work done on my car. Alas, I'm living in the sticks. Oh well.

Ended up costing me 240 bucks for a new front screen(fitted) and new rubbers front and rear with locking strip :-)

thanks for the replies, I've fitted a few screens before, it wasnt that hard, but for some reason i still dont have fond memories of doing it...

talked to them about the chrome locking strip and its all sorted. I dug around my piles of screens and found one that was covered in mud and crap, cleaned it up and its like new, no marks or anything. which is excellent.

the car will be undercover whlie its at home, so it should last a whle. Its not concourse or anything, I just remember seeing the chrome striping on a car at a show and thinking it looks good, so i wanted to go with it.

I've just had the F & R screens reinstalled in my S by Windscreens O'Brien. I had the glass, they supplied the rubbers. Beware, the chrome locking strip that WO'B's have is NOT the correct one, it it a flat back one, without the extra lip that actually does the locking. The black locking strip they have is right, ask them to show you the two side by side. I sourced the proper chrome locking strip from Mini Automotive in Ipswich, 07 3281 4255. Steve
