Post subject:  Drive shafts?

The question was put forward to me last nite over a few drinks, and I couldnt give a definate answer. Is the length of the drive shaft on a disc brake front end different in length to a drum braked front end? Is the CV joint different in any way between the two? Could a drum brake drive shaft and CV be used in a disc brake front end or vice versa? Any ideas!!!!

Driveshaft outer splines are all the same, inner splines are same for rubber coupling or `S' Hardy Spicer and so is length,, pot joint splines are different and their shaft lengths are too.

So- pick driveshafts to suit the inner joints you have, and you're sweet, unless it's a hybrid ToyoSuki power unit...

Only way I know to use discs with Drum CVs is go with Hondas or similar.
Oops, I just tripped over Anton's 9" set...

I'm about to do the same in the S replica-, I'm fitting pot joints and diff shafts to an S box, but the CVs are drum, with Honda brakes.

Hey if it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck... but yeah it's got Honda brakes- stops better than a duck. And, the wrong hose clamps too... I don't care- my wife likes it, and whatever makes her happy I like too!

ok, so a pot joint shaft could be used but the drum cv cant, so it would need a cv to suit the disc brake hub and also have the same number of splines as the drive shaft, yeah? What Honda model brake setup suits a Mini? Civic?

Yeah Honda Civic `83-87. discs are 230mm dia (9"+) but you use with DRUM CVs, drive flanges & swivel hubs, not disc ones. Check out the Honda thread in Mini Mods- I know it's long but just skip the chatter bits.

With 12x5 wheels, you can leave them at full size and they really stop! For 10x5 wheels you need to turn them down to 7.9".

Yeah I spotted that thread bout the brake mod, seems like you have quite a bit of knowledge on that subject Doc. I think I might seriously look into that, along with the N12 dizzy mod. Ill have to go though the entire thread and check it all out. Well I have 12 by 5 superlites, so that will be good leavin em full size diam. Thats great, thanks!!!!
