I had a Mini SS for a number of years before I wrote it off. One of the things I heard about them was that although there was a model run of 500 the factory wasn't really geared up for a special model at the time and there might have been a fair amount of variance between cars.

Mine matched the brochure fairly closely:
Metallic brown (Nutmeg) paint with a beige vinyl roof
Mini SS side stripes
Marchal driving lights
Remote bonnet release
Tacho
Radio cassette with Roof mounted aerial
ROH Contestas
Beige Vinyl/Brown cloth interior
crap 998 engine with exhaust injection pump and charcoal canister

I'm just wondering what other people ended up with. I've seen a Blue SS and vaguely heard of a Red one too and somebody recently posted about later ones coming with 1100 engines (which sounds wrong for 1976, but who knows?). FWIW a genuine SS should have a compliance plate with Mini SS stamped on it. Unless they ran out of those too....

I had to replace the roof on mine due to rust under the vinyl, so lack of a vinyl roof may not be significant unless you are certain that it came from the factory that way. I had a friend whose 1275LS came from the factory with the boot badge reading "1275 SL".

a miini SS will have SS on the compliance plate... I have seen lots of imitations of these tho. so some people sell them off as saying it was a SS when it really isnt.,

but there was a fair bit of variance between all leyland cars tho

the ss was released to get rid of hail damaged cars, as the roof was covered in vinyl to hide the damage,. they were packed full of features like tape deck, twin speakers, tinted and heated windows, chrome exhaust extensiton, metallic paint, special interior and wheels, and any other standard features. there were only 500 made, and were one of the most luxurious minis released, it made the S look very very basic

Oh yeah , as far as I knew they were only available in the brown and blue but as with a lot of things BMC and BLMC anythings possible .... The SS was also the prelude to the LS , it sold well but because they said it was a run of 500 only (I have a couple of magazine articals here , one says 300 and the other 500) they had to rename it for the 998LS .

Hi,
I have an SS, the hail damage may be the reason that it was choosen to be turned into a convertible. I cant be much help on the options as mine is anything but original. It has an 1100 engine, but I can guarantee that is original either.

Thanks,

Jim. :D

Thanks for the responses people. The convertible job was probably another way of 'fixing" the rust that the vinyl roofs caused. When I bought mine back in 1986 I had a look at three or four different cars, all nutmeg, and even then they were getting a bit ropy. I'm not surprised that so few have survived.
