Black plugs means its running too rich, white plugs means too lean, ideally you need a greyish colour to the plugs if its running right.

Do a compression test on all 4 and compare to each other. Possibly a dead/dieing plug/lead or dizzy cap issue.

Doubt anything to do with valve stem seal/s so maybe worn oil control ring on that cylinder but I reckon it's more likely something to do with ignition without other info.

Maybe swap the plug to another cylinder to try?

Hmmm,

Daniel

I didnt think we could call things black or white any more

you would have to describe them some thing like this

Black= Native West Indian in apperance or the Color things go after Mr Lucas has struck

White= the color of Cushs Bum

Yes you should mention that

Its saves us telling you that the engine is about to blow up and drop bits all over the road.

As said replace the plugs and this time tighten them. Take the car for a quick blat around the streets until its warm. Then listen for a miss, if still there pull the plugs out and again check for colour.

If still smokey - replace that plug lead and again take for test drive.

If problem still exists on that cylinder then you have an oil control problem of some sort. Live with it until the day comes when the plug constantly fouls making driving unbearable and when you have a spare $1000 for an engine reco.

Did you figure out if the plug/lead was dead or was it just from being loose.

I always do a compression test before a service to check the health of the engine. Black plugs are caused by a multitude of problems, the easiest one being incorrect mixture. When one is black on a carby 5-port mini engine, it can't be a mixture problem.

I had a mate who had a Datsun 260Z with triple webers, he had a re-occuring intermittant problem on one cylinder and blamed the carbies and sold them, turned out it was a dead (faulty I should say, it still worked occasionally) lead. Tough lesson, try buying triple webers now

i bought new plugs and leads for a couple of reasons

1. because the engine didn't feel right at higher revs/load

2 I noticed that one of the leads had bean rubbing on the grill and had worn down

3. because the car had been stationary for a while and deserved something new.. :)

i drove it to work and back yesterday.... a good mix of uphill , downhill and traffic

there's a big difference...especially up the top of third and fourth...

On one stretch of a long straight downhill, i put the boot in and i had to back off as the needle sailed passed 75 and on towards 80, where previously it was a fair task to get it up there (even downhill)..

i was planning on attempting the timing (sans timing light) but then i decided to check how my timing was, since i was at brickworx anyway... i'm at about 10 deg advance.... so i don't need to bother..
but i'm slightly annoyed... because it means that the power i want, mean i need to start adding o removing things from the engine now... :(

:{

any who, i'll be doing the tappets today with my new feeler guage...

it fangs well now... lets see if we canget it fanging quitely.. :P

A couple of things,

Stop that lead rubbing on the grill if possible (small thing)

10 deg advance at idle might be good, but what about total? You can do this on Dyno to find the extra power hidden at the moment.
