Cam looks pretty tame- not much lift. I'd take it to Graham Russell and give him $100 to sort it.. :P

fwoooooorrrrrrrr.....look at those tyres Cushy!!

Nice score though...even if it's a stock cam, it will be good for a regrind.

is it the sort of cam that's supposed to be used with 1:x ratio rockers...?

Post subject:  Free Cam

Hey better to start with a free cam that's like a blank canvass, Graham R can do something good with it and for 100 bucks hey bargain.

Kev, do you remember that cam you sold me for my old green mini thaht I never put in the car? How does that compare to the cam I have in my car now? I may be able to get the old one back if h never fitted it.

Oz you have a Kent MD286 in there- it's not much different to an RE-13 really. Not worth pulling out. We got 110HP and 100 lb/ft torque on GR's engine dyno last Xmas.
Also it's a spider drive cam- if you try to pull it out in the car, the spider can drop into the gearbox... not good....

Rockers are forged Cooper S, with offset bushes. You will get another neddy or 2 if you fit 1.5 rockers.
Don't buy them yet though- I'm investigating Toyota Corolla ones... $cheap. :P

Sell the RE-13 to Dean... for his 1275LS...

Bugger, i should have kept that cam..... Oh well....

Anyway, i got a heap of "standard" cams that if anyone wants for "regrinders" I'm happy to let a few dollars change hands.....

First notice.... I'm having a garage clean-out just after christmas and ITS ALL GOING......

anyway, back to your regularly scheduled broadcast.......

cheers thommo...:) i've got 9 wheels and seven hub caps now :) strange tho...the car still isn't going :)

doc..how do you grind a cam for more lift? :?

When they regrind the cam, it takes more metal off the base circle (the fat bit) than the top of the lobe. Cam lift = (distance from base circle to top of lobe) - (base circle diameter).
Valve lift = cam lift x rocker ratio.

so the lift you are talking about isn't he height of the lift is it the duration of lift?

I'm talking about the height of lift. Yes the duration is usually increased as well.
To measure lift of your cam, get a vernier caliper or micrometer, hold cam with lobe at top. Measure from top to bottom. Now measure from left to right (base circle diameter) take 2nd measurement from first, the difference is cam lift.

To measure duration is more involved- you need to put it in a motor, set up a degree wheel on the crank and a dial gauge on the valves. Then you can plot the opening and closing points.

I just put a reground cam into Mini Mad's 1152 motor, it was 10* out when checked this way. No fault of the cam- crook keyway position in one sprocket. Now it's got a 10* offset key in there to fix it.

hey cushy, just note that widened steel rims are illegal in SA. Regency wont pass em, a cop who knows will slap a sticker on your car for em too.

So keep a set of 10x3.5 stockies (with brand new tyres) for when that special day arrives
