So I have come to the stage where the car's dodge paint job by previous owner is flaking, washing away, looking crap anything you can think of... Now I want to paint it myself, but have no idea what the process is for painting a car. All i know is sand, prime and paint, and in no great detail. As I know many of you have painted your own minis, I would like to know the steps and just a rough guide of what to do. As I am wanting to paint it at home as I have a low budget and $5000 is too much for me.... Looking to spend around $2000 for the whole job... Thanks in Advanced Ian.... |

I can see no reason why a panel beater could'nt repaint it for $2000, i've seen whole shells restored with rust & panel repairs & painted for $4000, shop around, tell them what you want & your budget, you might get a suprise. Doogie |

I got my car repainted (just the outside) for $2000. They sanded it back and everything, I dropped it off and picked it up. That was it. Get some prices. |

If yor not interested in long hours of saying "Why!?!?" Then go pro! But DIY is very cheap and yeah good fun. Above all shop around talk to many panel beaters and painters see what's on offer. If going pro go 2pac, if going backyard go acrylic. |

i got quoted by a prestige panel beater shop for a respray and bog up for 2 grand and that was 2 tone aswell. if 2 grand is your budget, you should be able to find some shop that will do it |

So it sounds like the previous owner knew nothing about painting a car, n thats why the paint is falling off it and flaking. So now u want to repaint the car when u know nothing about painting, so that the next person who buys ur car has to deal with ur paint job that will end up falling off and flaking. Get a shop to do it!!! |

Painting a car yourself is hard work, and the first car I painted I was very unhappy with the results and ended up selling it cheap soon after. 
My advice, spend $30-50 on a book on bodywork and painting. There are probably a dozen good titles out there. Once you have read up what's involved, then you will be better informed on whether you want to proceed with DIY. If you don't go DIY, at least you will be more informed when you talk to the pros about what you want. As others have said, your budget may pay for an outside-only respray by a pro. But since you have paint flaking, you will probably have to go back to bare metal. You might negotiate with the sprayer where you strip the car down to bare metal yourself, then have the pro apply the primer and paint. Cheers, |

and do your self a favour, find a carport or construct a booth, use scape bit of wood and pipe and use the masking tape with the 1 metter of plastic hanging off it, you will spend hours trying to rub and sand bugs and dirt out of that paint |

My van had the same flaking problem. Previous owner painted acylic over the factory paint (enamel i guess), with no primer. I went back to bare metal to fix this. My cousin had here faded paint on a corolla lightly sanded and sprayed by a pro for $800. But in your case the previous mistakes have to be removed - bare metal probs. |

If you know what your doing , DIY can be considered "PRO" I want to paint my mini aswell, I need to find the right paint, i want a metallic british racing green type, can have pearl, neets to be acrylic, i want it to shine brightly in the sun (hence metallic) does anyone know a paint like this? |

yeah i would seriously suggest getting someone else to do the job as you have no experience and i hate to say it but you will stuff it up if you try it yourself. but thats not saying it cant be done. i suggest doing a lot of reading on this forum (search what mini mike and collins have shared about resprays) as well as sites like http://www.autobody101.com/forums/ and http://www.autobodystore.com/ because there is a hell of a lot more than just strip, prime and paint. |

I've been though it aoll and was worth it. Although I have spent many, many, many hours cutting and polising to get it right. But I have very shiney paint now. I would say it's a great learning experience and is worth doing BUT do your research, learn as much as you can. My next spray job will be even better without needing so many hours to fix my mistakes due to me having learnt some things. Cookie, I believe the pearl is jsut an added pigment that gives that finish. But I do not know if it's harder to paint, I didn't go metallic as I know for me it is harder to paint. So yeah you would need an acrylic paint colour wityh metallic added and the pigment that is pearlescent. It would give one hell of a good looking car! Just clear coat it a lot to give some room for cutting and polishing. |
