| Post subject: | webber questions |
hey... I was just wandering how to work out what size weber would fit my mini, and if i would have to cut a hole in the firewall. Also if i get a weber is there a certain type of exaughst i have to buy or do all aftermaket ones fit. any help appreciated or just a link to another post thanks. |

i had to shave 0.7mm of my exhuast manifolds plates, 1st time i ever bought valiar calipers, but yeah most do fit, you need a really tiny filter or a manifold which is on an angle |

Otherwise get the 45mm versions. They are the same lenght afaik. The carb needs a manifold to mount it on the head. There are generaly 3 lengthts 1) So called "Swan neck" type which is very short and very restrictive and is generaly considered not worth the effort because its so deterimental to performance (see G.Russels article on induction in the "Mini Experience" or the Vizard yellow "bible"). The benefit though is that you can fit pretty much any filter you want including a K&N. 2) The 5 inch medium manifold including the Redline 5008 and the Warnerford equivalent as well as the Maniflow 5in. This is a compromise as they allow you to fit a filter (ramflo but not K&N) w/o cutting the firewall (too much) but are still restrictive. Many people here had their alloy 5in manifolds ported out for better breathing - they say that if you get the Maniflow mild steel unit you wont have to do this. 3) the longer race type units, including the G. Russell medium manifold and the maniflow 7in one etc. They are the best breathers but you wont fit a filter on the carb without cutting the firewall and idealy plumbing in a box. In terms of the exhaust manifold nothing for the mini ever fits perfectly the first time over and some 3into1 exhaust manifolds have clearance issues with the longer manifolds but with a bit of filing any decent LCB should fit with any manifold. Rather than filing the flanges down (making them weaker) it's better to make up some stepped washers. Easiest way to do this IMO is put a dab of weld on one side of the thick washers, then grind the weld to give whatever step you need. Usually it's only 1mm or so.

that was Surprisingly quick response, i will continue reading up on the topic before i make a choice on webber's. One last question though has anyone had trouble getting a mini registered because of the hole in the firewall. thanks |

Minis had a hole in the wall from the factory for the speedo! I don't see the problem.
