Post subject:  how to get inner race off hub?
me and rodney were out in the garage today, trying to renew his wheel bearings to try and solve the problem he's been having for however long. we encountered a couple of problems along the way but we overcame them, but the major stick in the pants is this: the innner race for the outer bearing is stuck on the hub, we can't get it off. heres a pic

(its pretty big so i thought i'd chuck it on a link instead :D)

we've tried penetrene, a hammer and screw driver, just pulling it off, but it doesnt want to budge. theres a couple of other pics on my photobucket, but they're fairly blurry

so...any hints or suggestions????

Get anglegrinder and a new disc, grind a flat on it to within a poofteenth of the shaft.
Then hit it there with a BFH and cold chisel, it will split. Wear eye protection.
Don't forget that seal ring goes on first when you put the new bearings on.
Don't just throw it together, try the new bearing on the shaft.
If new bearing is tight, rub the shaft with 180 or so wet & dry until bearing will just slide on by hand.

Got an oxy/blowtorch/flamethrower around? :D

Heat it up and hit it. Won't hang around long. 8)

You do have to be careful not to heat the shaft or the rest of the hub, don't want
it locking on tighter or weakening the iron.

dont ahve any pf those things i dont think....except a BFH, we've got a cople of them :D

doc, what about greasing the shaft if the bearing doesnt go on easily???

The reason they jam on is, the `shaft' machining tolerance varies a bit.
Some are tight, some are a slide on fit.
Often it's just a high spot on the shaft.
By polishing these down you will make it easier to get off next time.
just wrap a bit of wet & dry paper round it and move it to and for.
It'll get grease on there anyway, when you put the drive flange/shaft through the bearings. :wink:

I've dealt with recalcitrant bearings on shafts with grinders for years. It is the easiest way to deal with the stubborn little buggers. With grinders available from Supercrap for 30 bucks there's little excuse to fritter about with hammers and drifts.

There's usually a big Supercrap sale on boxing day isn't there? That is if you can move of course....
