This is the part that the dip stick slides in and out of, it's either worn or missing o rings as it pulls straight out with the dipstick, causing a small oil leak as it's not sealing.
What's it called so I can try and get a replacement?

Yeah its missing o rings, I cant remember if there was just 1 or 2, go and see some sort of parts specialist they should have orings and seals. I also used a little bit of araldite around it when I built mine as it was still a little loose. Its still in there after 8000 miles.

What you req is a dip stick tube. The one in the photo is an Australian made part and is no longer made. It does not have any o rings fiited to it - it was a "tap in fit" into the block.
English cars used a copper type tube that was not interchangeable.

Clean it and the hole with a rag & thinners, put some Loctite 601 on it, and tap it in there... :wink:

The plastic in this thing has minimal fexibility (especialy after al those years) so you want to exercise maximum caution tapping it as it takes nothing at all to make it crumble into pieces. And these are no longer made and nearly impossible to get (I'd like a few if anyone has some) not to mention the inconvenience of shards of plastic in your sump.

They are tougher than you think- they are nylon, not those later plastics that fall to bits!
Get an old one- just try to break it... you will be surprised. :wink:

<edit> they don't wear out- I just move 'em from engine to engine... :lol:

Doh, looks like I'll just have to find some way of jamming it in there :roll: I'll try good ol loctite though I'm afraid it may be too word for that, would plumpers tape be any good?

Yeah it'll seal it- but... don't let it get into the oil...

I'd try Loctite first. If it's real loose I'd use Loctite 515 master gasket, it fills gaps better.. :wink:

I had the same problem with my dipstick tube 2 years ago were the tube would come out with dipstick.
I wrapped some plumbers tape around the top of the tube and pushed back into the block, its been good ever since
