Post subject:  engine removal

ok i am planning to remove the engine on the australia day long weekend and am after pointer on how to make it as easy and smooth as possible i got one of those engine hooks that you bolt under the head stud to lift it out heard they made things easier

ive never removed an engine before so it should be interesting
few things im not sure of
am i correct in saying you do not have to remove the radiator
do i have to remove the carbys to get the engine out
do i need to remove the cvs or will it all fall out so to speak when i lift the engine

any thing else anyone can think of that would help make this a little easier would be greatly appreciated
anyone up for lending a helping hand or anyone who wants to see how not to do it is welcome to come watch

My suggestion is to take a few photos of the engine bay so that you can see where to hook everything up when you finish.

You need to undo the cvs befoe you lift the motor, I prefer to remove the radiator to avoid damage.

Don't forget to undo the speedo cable, the easy way is to lift the motor up and then undo the cable while it is easy to get to.

Yeah if its your first time definitely remove the radiator. It will make the whole process so much easier, it just gets in the way. As for the carby, you have to take the exhaust off so you might as well.

Take as much as you can off it before lifting to avoid dammage.

Assuming you have a late model clubman:
Disconnect and remove the gearchange by driving out the roll pins and top steady bar bolt.

The easiest way to undo the inner pot joints is to break the top ball joints on both sides, undo the straps to the inner boots and pull the inner races out of the pots. Once they are right out of the way, take the motor out. Do that last as it's the messiest :wink:

Don't forget:
Take off all the extractors and carby, accellerator and choke cables
Disconnect the fuel line
Speedo cable
Take off earth strap
Oil pressure lines or connections
I would take out the starter motor too

Disconnect your Battery

I take of the Rad, Alt, Starter, Exhast and Cab so you have as much room to move the engine around. Disconnect all wires and if you'r not to sure label each wire. as Mention don't forget the Spedo cable and the EARTH Strap.

Yep you will need a lifing braket that fits to the top of the head on the studs

Additional the pot joints or CV's

Take your time don't rush

If you can get some one who has been thier before to give you a hand and get a couple of cold beers Ready

If you have something to lower the engine onto with wheels will be handy for later also :wink:

thanks wel looks like i got my work cut out for me might start during the week puliing all he bits and pieces off
i didnt even think that the starter and alt would hav to come off

They don't, its just advisable from people who have done this before....its all about giving yourself more room for the engine to come out and it is less weight you have to lift.

not a huge differnace but they can get in the way and you will be taking them off once the engine is out any way..


Ow and don't forget the Engine mounts also from inside the wheel arch

if you can and know how to re install, take the dissy out with everything else,

trying to take the engine out any other way than through those top head bolts is hell, you need the engine to tilt back to get it back in,

i did the removal 2 months ago and for a large block of steel, maybe 15 bolts, a coulpe of screws and a couple more wires i could nt beleive how long it took to get it out but once you understand it goes in and out alot easier, its like a 2 year old walking down stairs,

and buy your self a set of long ass pliers, thanks aaron :wink:

Bob, in my opinion leave the radiator & virtually everything on the engine, jack up the car & put stands under it,

take off the front wheels
Disconnet the battery
Take off the bonnet & grill & panel
Take off the air filter & neck off the carb/carbies
Discoonet the wiring,heater hoses,fuel lines,slave cylinder & engine stady/steadies & earth strap & battery cable at the solenoid
Disconnet the exhaust
Put it into reverse & knock the roll pin out of the gear selector & unbolt the selector
Undo the top ball joints & tie rod ends
Pop & break the taper on the ball joint & tie rods, with either a ball joint breaker or hitting it with 2 big hammers
Lay the hubs over till the pot joints pop out
Undo the engine mount bolts
Lift out engine, undo the speedo cable when you have clearence

Anywhere between 1/2 hour & a day you should have a engine out that looks similar to this.

Just one more thing to cover and that is the removal of the crosspiece at the front between the gaurds. This has the bonnet latch mounted on it and with it gone, you have much more clearance to work and you don't have to lift the motor as high to roll the car away.

the part under lined is where im ganna get stuck i think im ganna have to revert to the book to get this part

yer i was stuck on this one as well, i had never heard of a pin punch set,

the top rod that holds the the shifter in place i found that you need to take the exhaust off 1st to get the bolt out, its right up against your tunnel in the fire wall and floor panel
