Post subject:  Dim Dash Light
Hi
Just wondering how can you make the dash lights brighter
I've played with the dimmer switch and you can only set it to dim to dimmer :roll:

Is it just a matter of putting better earth to the bulb connection?
or replacing a higher rating bulb?
what type of bulbs are they?

If your connections are all good and clean. and you have a good earth you could try higher rating bulb but just be careful of heat and any nearby plastics

Bulbs deteriorate with age and use, toss away any that are blackening.

Also check the battery voltage with engine running, if below 14V I'd find another alternator/voltage regulator.

Wombat, I don't think Clubbies can get higher rated bulbs.

I checked the battery & alternator and they are good
other lights are not dim just the dash lights

checked all the bulbs and they dont have any black/smokey effect on the bulb
the indicator bulbs are bright but not the ones for the tacho, fuel gauge and speedo

Cant I use those bright LEDs that doesnt produce heat like normal filament bulbs

anyone knows what type bulb are used for our dash?

Wedge Base Globes 12v 5w, although a 6w is available

Hella p/no W 125 12v 5w
W126X 12v 6w

WE used the LED in our daughter's clubamn no problems at all, sure made a difference.

So are all electrical components like lights, etc only powered by 12V from the battery directly? sorry, i am beginner. Or 14V?


So a 12V 5Watt will do it good, heh?

Also how would you go about changing the dash board light bulbs? how would you dismantle the dash?


They are dim on my matic too. The oil pressure gauage doens't even have any lights coming out from it at all.

ANother strange thing is that when I got it on the first day and was parking at my gf's garage, I noticed something.

Say you put on "gear reverse" and observe the headlights, they are very bright. Now, if you do the same with the other gears (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, D), the bloody left light just go dimmer so it makes it look like a "half-blined mini", pretty much like somone who has just got bashed in the left eye. :D . And it's now waiting for treatment.

When the egine is running it should be upto 14 when the engine is off everything is on the 12.

The bulbs are in the back of the panels it depends what dash is in your minis as to how to you get them out to change them. Once you have the instruments opods out the bulbs are very easy to change. Grieg at mini classic Ermington has seen your Auto Ithink you said in a another thread call him he maybe able to advise.

Oh and sorry to hear you are having so many problems with the matic but don't lose heart they really are a unique car.

Alrite. I will go there and let him have an overhaul of the mini and get everything fixed. Prepared to spend big bucks. haha

Yup, they are autos, not much left heh? Do you know how many of these are still around? I dun have a clue. My gf keep asking me to sell my matic and get a new Jap car like Hondas or Toyotas cus safer and less problems.

But I insist to fight the battle and keep it cus it looks classy and fun to drive on the street.

But I guess she 's right at some point since it's really a hobby car, not really like an everyday car like Toes and Hons. But it's fun.

Ben,
There is an earth wire (black) from the temp and oil pressure gauges to back of speedo. Often the connections get dirty/rusty, particularly if the car has stood unused for a long time.
As yours was, before I bought it a few years ago. :wink:

LED globes are great if you still run a generator like me. They use stuff all power, don't heat up, are very bright and last forever. However, I am not sure how the dimmer would work with them, as LED's can light up as little as 1.5 volts i think.

As I look into the headlights(when it's off of course). It seems the centre is made out of a thicker filament (like coils) than what you found for a usual "Light bulb". It also doesn't have a sphereical glass thingy surrounding the filament. So I bet it would be Halogen lamps?

Anyone have Xenon (Bright White lights) for their mini headlights? I wanna get a pair for it. :) Would a 6000K suit?

Ben, your car has what are called `sealed beams'.
There is no separate bulb, the whole headlamp is a bulb. :lol:
If you want halogen lamps you need an H4 conversion. Available from Hella, Narva, Wipac and others.
I run Wipac QuadOptics, from UK. :wink:

Yeah, that means they are the older type, plane landing lamps. They are cheaper.

I mean I am looking 4 HID(Xenon), not halogen (I think this is more yellowish).

Wipac? did you approach them directly (since in UK)? or you buy them from a dealer here?
