just installed an under bonnet sound proofing kit and also another full roll of sound proofing material...

Almost felt like i was driving a different car when i first got in her again 8)
Can actually hear the stereo when i'm driving now so am pretty happy with it all. :D

I put some behind the (centre) speedo, then fabricated a metal plate to stop the draughts etc.- then some more inside the engine bay, up the top on the firewall.
Also installed some inside behind dash inserts & below the dash against the firewall!

Was thinking of putting some more above the roof lining and behind the door/rear 1/4 cards as well- not too fussed about the slight addition of weight but would this be overkill?
Want it as quiet as possible & might help keep stereo noise in the car?

Go for is buddy, I have heard that putting it in the roof makes the most difference. This means pulling the headling.

What sort of sound deadening material? Is it the felt stuff or the heavy dynamat-type stuff?

1) Headlining is 2 pieces- pops out with no effort :) tis an 850

2) the stuff i used is Avonway soundproofing- medium density.
under the bonnet is the same gear gut with a vinyl cover- easy clean..

i could be fooled but it does sound a touch more bassy (not a word is it!) inside. So with mikes words ringing in my ears, i'll go the whole hog.

Was going to use the dynamat gear on one stereo installers words but shopped for some more advice (luckily) and he said it was a waste of money and would make the old girl a moving lead weight :shock:
This fella said they really use that to make doors into 'boxes', block service holes etc.
As mine are mounted in pods on kick panel- WOFTAM

Avonway? Never heard of it.

Where did you get it from and how much did it cost?- coz I'm looking for a good sound insulation product.

It's pommy gear, labelled avonway soundproof felt. Got it from minisport in adelaide- they have a shop on ebay(minisport1275 i think) & has a rubberised side for more 'density'..
A 54" x 36" roll cost me $60 plus gst.
It's basically the perfect width for a mini so less cutting :)
Even has a picture of one on it. would post a picture but pc is playin up at the moment!

Thanks. Are you talking just about the bonnet soundproofing kit like they've got on ebay or did they sell you just a lenght of the stuff to place whereever you like?

yeah sorry- the avonway gear is a roll- cut up and put wherever...
the under bonnet kit is about $40 i think and is all precut to size (at least for a roundy, dont think it fits clubbie). i used loctite headlining spray to hold in- $40 a can!! good stuff tho.

the roll is actually 54" (1370mm) x 36" (915mm) so a over a sqm.
if u just want to cut out engine noise u would only need 1 roll for firewall etc and the bonnet kit.
that's going to give u a big drop in engine noise (even with my K&N filter- v loud b4).
also cover any holes thru firewall.
my floor carpet already had some cheap gear under it so i didn't change that.
i have now done roof, behind rear seat, doors etc. and is only slightly quieter.
i only did all this because i have a set of 12s sitting on the back seat and wanted to contain as much sound as possible, stop it bouncing between panels, attempting to make the bass deeper.
all up i used 3 rolls and 2 cans of adhesive.
-roof took 1 whole roll-
like i said b4- wasn't concerned too much about weight- i added a few good kilos i'm sure!

There is nothing wrong with dynamat, infact it is one of the best sound deadning materials available. I work in the car audio industry, and for the money, dynamat is definetly worth it.

I have not yet tried it on a mini, but only because I have not yet gotten my mini painted, but will be using a full dynamat bulk-kit (rrp $299).

That's understandable. The bass frequencies will carry further. :)

Bearing in mind that Bass is non-directional and absorbed by materials like carpet etc

yeah agree with dynamat being a good product but for the amount i was putting in the chap thought it would be a lot of added weight. (i don't know what dynamat weighs?)

my first concern was to cut the engine noise and was told that the dynamat was more for sound deadening than sound proofing?!? is there a difference, i dunno..
this fella is a custom installer too, but ask 10 people & u get 10 different answers :?
in the end as long as it does the job, right?

also turned the subs a different direction and got an instant 4-5 db increase on the track i was using to test :D should have tried it when i put them in..
now the bass is totally different!- can't explain it, its just so much more intense!
its not good on the ol ears or the gut.. it could invoke a bowel movement :wink:
