when it rains, it pours, and molly dosen't seem to go to well in the wet weather, she can get up to 60 with a struggle but wont go above and at one stage she went all the way down to 5 ks an hour.

what the prob, i just changed the dizzy cap and leads recently, same model. there is a funny bit on the left hand side of the engine with wires all attached to it and it has watter on it sometimes, also when i look at the lead that gose to the coil it is wet on the inside so i wipe it off but i dosen't fully solve the problem, plus last time this happenned i decided i would re-attche the pipe from the air box to the funny bit over the manifold. also my relay ges wet could that be part of the problem?

atleast i ahve a dizzy cover

can some-one tell me everything i should try and cover and fix and what might be the problem. it seems to be only going wrong when i accelerate.

anyone else have problems driving in the rain?

Well if you have replaced your cap and leads prior ro xmas, then water is still getting into your dissy. My guess, and it is only a guess, your power lead for your dissy has no insulated plug that goes into the dissy. What I am talking about is the point in which the lead enters the dissy is loose and letting water in. Replace the points and capacitor, they probably haven't been changed in years. The new points come with the correct hole plug, so that should seal it up nice and tight.
Another thing to look at is how tight the dissy cap is on the dissy. if there is still a little movement, take the two locating spring clip off and bend them in a slightly. This is will give them a little more tension.
Your dissy should now be right and rain. Something else to look at is your Coil. are all the leads tight onto the coil, and are they well insualted? IE Good tight connections and electrical taped if they are the old type metal connector's with not platic insulation.
Have a look at your earth strap, it is clean and tight to the body with a good metal to metal connection? If not clean it up.
Try those things and see if that solves your issue.

Cheers
Aaron

Most Minis have the coil in a stupid place, the worst spot is next to the alternator. In real wet weather it can get drowned.
Moisture on top of the coil can cause `flashover' where the H/T spark goes to ground on the primary terminal.
This is usually due to dirt buildup. Or a crack in the coil, as Mini Mad found out. Cleaning it and spraying WD40 helps, unless cracked.

If you must run Lucas ignition, WD40 is your best friend. it works better than the cheapo `Australian Export' etc water displacers.

Electronic ignition is a big improvement in wet weather, due to no points- either a Pertronix ignitor mounted in the Lucas dizzy, or a Pulsar or other electronic dizzy.
Moving the coil onto the inner guard helps too.

Wot they said /\

The other thing to do would be to apply silicone grease in small quantities at every part where water collects or can get in....eg on the rim of the distributior body where the cap clamps.

Another thing is frangers!! there are rubber boots for both the dissy and the coil....and you can also get a splash shield that fits between the grill and the electricals....Minis can be made drown proof..but it ain't easy.

Use the distributer cover I gave you (rather than the air dam you call a splash shield) , and smear a thin bit of green grease (what is that stuff auto elec's use , the copper grease they like coating battery terminals with ?) where the coil lead boot fits the neck of the coil to keep any water out of there . Also check your crimp on connectors are tight and the surfaces clean .

By the way , can you reduce the width of your sig pic a bit so half your message isn't off the page .....

been using that cover for ages took the shield off and put the cover on as soon as i got home afte that trip, thanks for that again. the stuff on the coil lead connection is a good idea, could fix everying. i've also done a few other things, but wont know if it works till next time i drive in the rain.

also have been trying to re-size sig pic but last 3 attempts have failed :(

If using grease, make it silicone grease only. Others will let the sparks short out. Just like a permanently wet dizzy cap.

and if we see you playing with the grease too long....you are in trouble :P ...Vaseline or petroleum jelly is also OK in moderation
