Welcome Sorceress, people don't generally go the Turbo route for the road with the A Series....gearbox is the weakest link!

Supercharging is considered a better way to go....and kits are available from Link Automotive in Melbourne (for example). A turbo engined conversion like the Toyota Starlet is another way to go. How about Suzi GTi?

I don't know if either is really worth the trouble when there are so many other more "conventional" ways to make your Mini go-fast.

Search on Turbo and you will find heaps of opinions 8)

probably a good way to go is to find someone whos getting a bit a stuff in from england and get a 1275 metro turbo donk put in there crate

turboing is cheaper way to go as supercharger kits are pretty pricey but i think there was a subaru one people where using that sounded ok and reasonable but easy to get a litttle turbo from a jap auto spares / wreckors and plonk it on same things need to be done as with any other engine change compression ratio etc
on low boost shouldnt worry a good condition gearbox as long as not flogged

Mate I recently sold a turbo engine to a guy on the Sunshine Coast, hopefully he gets online here as I dont have any photos of the engine and it was a sweeeeeet bit of equipment. I sold it as a complete unit for $4500 and everything was there, but hadnt been run for a few years. As for which one to go for. The turbos are a bit difficult as you are limited for space to cool the thing unless you dont mind chopping into your car a bit. It doesnt really matter which route you go, as soon as you make big power the box will always be the weak point. As long as you are not brutal with your shifts and opt for a decent box ie 4sp straight cut or better if you have the money should hold together. Prices vary. Power costs money if you want it to be reliable. My turbo motor cost around 8k complete and my supercharged unit owes me 11k, but if I did it again would cost me a lot less as RnD was a bit expensive. Any Q's drop me a line.

i quess it all depends on what you want if you want serious power then money is the name of the game if you want a fun little engine then i would go with a turbo install
Very similar to a guy on her Kazjim where he plumed the whole thing together a bit differently then normal put the turbo basically over the clutch area of the engine if i remember
This way meant no body cutting
Cooling allways a prob with any powerfull mini engine but can be handled with a decent rad and small intercooler.
I dont know if id bother going down the way of straight cut gearboxes etc unless your going to race it of you want a big big power machine
Cheap way NOTE there is no cheap way loll get a decent 998 or 1100 strengthen up the internals get crank treated, centre main straps, correct compression ratio decent pistons JPs or something, high flow water pump, fuel pump get a small turbo or a charade or something get a manifold and plumbing made up
whack it together
Rebuild box if needed

IMHO - Its all a waste of money....

If you want a cheap turbo'd car, buy a silvia, and use the money you've saved on a new paint job for the mini......

The A series drivetrain just cant cut it.

Just the opinion ive come to, after much R&D.

So, what breaks in the drivetrain?

I know boostedmini is running a rebuilt K box in his 1400? turbo, nothing's broken yet. And kazjim is still running a stocko rodchange, ditto.

These are both road cars, I guess for draggin' you might need something stronger...?

Yea, Turbo 998 here.....(Sorry, been quiet lately.....But I'm back)

AS Doc said, I'm running a STOCK clubbie rod-change in mine, not real sure about the DIff, but we think its a 3.76:1 ish ratio.... 4000RPM on the freeway=105ishkph .....

I DO thrash it mercilessly, but i try to limit my take-offs to the lower-end of the squealing and smokeshow.......(3500RPM Takeoffs, slide clutch...)

The Biggest hassle I'm having at the moment is clutch slip, while the HP isnt massive, the Torque on these is phenominal, I'm running a "Blue" diaphragm and it slips just about everytime going into 4th under boost..... time to get an Orange methinks.....

I have thought about the Turbo/SC argument and while I'm running a Turbo, i think a SC MAY be better in some situations, like traffic and city driving.. but on the Freeway, i can just ease up the pedal, drop the boost and get the fantastic economy of a 998 with a largish cam....(about 40Mpg) under boost well, lets just say its about 5Mpg !!
