hey
i hate seeing good stuff being thrown out, so i bought this battery from k mart 2 months ago, cost 120 bucks as one of the good ones, charged it up, putt it in the celica, did nt charge it back up but jump started it every 2 weeks, now ive put it on the charger and the thing wont hold a charge,

if this is the case then im going cheapo next time cause batteries arent worth a squirt of piss

Get thee a shoebox, and religiously put receipts for important stuff therein.

If you go the k-mart with the battery and say you wish to swap it they will do so without a receipt. Batterties have a date of manufacture on them.

I have done that with lots of things before, but Docs shoebox is recommended.

Kmarts return policy is nowhere near as harsh assome places. MAybe they have their policy on their site? I dunno. Anyway, you should try exchange it. The worst they can do is not let you.

yeah ive got the folder for the receipts and dockets for the celica and mini, but they are not in either of the folders, is their anything i can do with the battery, like change the distilled water,

batters used to out last an engine in the 80s, what happend to engineering

Firstly, you get what you pay for. In all honesty K Mart Batteries arent very good

Car batteries are made up of Lead Peroxide in the positive plates and "Spongy" Lead in the negative plates, If I remember correctly. They have Sulfuric Acid as an electrolyte.

The "Sulfur" in the electrolyte combines with the lead in both the positive and negative plates making Lead Sulphate.

This is known as Sulfation.

By charging a battery you reverse this cycle. If a car battery is left uncharged, the sulphation that has occured becomes permanent as it crystalises and is irreversible. This would normally only occur after a month but a K Mart battery "isnt worth a cup full of cold piss" (As my lecturer at trade school would say)

I would swap your battery over at K Mart as previously suggested or just go and buy a better battery.

You can always check the specific gravity of the electrolyte with a hydrometer to check the state of charge after you have charged it. You can also do an open circuit voltage test which is much easier. Your battery should read around 12.6 V. This is done by using a multimeter.

You can change your electrolyte by using either deionised or distilled water with a mixture of sulfuric acid. But if sulphation has occured or the plates have dried out your Cold Cranking Ampere rating (CCA) has been dramatically reduced and your battery is probably unservicable

Oh just thought i should add in that the Specific Gravity of a fully charged battery is 1.260.

The specific gravity is a ratio of the density of a substance to that of water.

It basically means how much solute there is in the solution. In this case the amount Sulfuric Acid there is in the distilled / deionised water.

If you ever need a new battery, go to Supercheap and buy the biggest CCA battery you can fit into your mini. And buy a BOSCH or a decent brand, then you won't have to buy one again for ages

Added to all thats been said above, some batteries die young regardless of the brand and others go for years.

In the electronics industry (which includes computer) the term for early failures is known as "infant mortality" and is suggested to be around 10% of componentry.

I had a month old big brand battery just die on me suddenly in the middle of a busy intersection once. It brought the car to a complete and total stop and the NRMA when he arrived just shrugged his shoulders and said "some die young".

Yes, the supplier did replace it without question but after i had to buy a battery from the NRMA to again become mobile.

Thank fully there were other cars in the household that welcomed a new battery

I assume you mean Sydney, not gulgong?
