ok well my mini has never been realy been a quiet one in the cabbin but recently it has started to really get on my nerves and as an every day driver its kinda sucky having to listen to the road all the time.

apart from all the rattles (from the doors with the door cards loose and the super annoying glass from the glass on my tacho not being held tight enough with the metal holders... which i can and WILL fix easily) its loud still.

ummm sorry, so i only have carpet on the floor. will putting some type of dampenerish thing under the carpet make it noticeably quieter + maybe new door and window seals, i just wanna know how to get it at a reasonable level, for a reasonable price.

anyways, i have a UK 81 highline, i got flasher stuf than the city etc, including deadining, which is all through my shed at the moment, here is a list:

* Thick (inch or so) mats on the engine side of the bulkhead, underside of the bonett, underside of the parcel shelf and the back(boot side) of the rear seat, also behind the heater, this is a horsehair type mate with a thick tar-like backing, that faces toward the carpet.

* 1/4 inch thick tar/underseal over the inside of the floor

*tar mat stuf on the inside of the door skins and rear "doorskins", inside the rear pockets..

*hessian/horsehair mat (12mm thick) on the roof

* thick horse hair mat (inch) over the tar on the floor, covered in thin "rag blanket" and then carpet over that.

*all the holes in the car, like arround the edge of the back seat, and bottom of the pockets are stuffed fith foam.

I believe all this to be standard except the "rag blanket" under the carpet, it was, i think, quite quiet, but its been a while!

I used to own a 78 South African Mini Vanden Plas (which had the title of the most luxurious mini produced in South Africa ....) , it had very thick (dense rubbery stuff) sound proofing on the floor under the carpet , very thick seat padding (drove it without the back seat in when I was cleaning , god it made some noise without it ..) and soundproofing on the firewall behind the pedals etc and behind the dash . Not sure but I suspect there was soundproofing between the roof and the hoodlining (except for where the webasto sunroof was) as well . It was very quiet and comfy to drive . Good luck with silencing it and hope your head survived as Jbeenz said ....

What I did to quiet down my LS was firstly paint the whole floor, inside and underneath the car with a sound deadening bitumen paint, then put in some of that thick felt/tar/felt underlay and new carpet..

Under the bonnet and in the boot, I fitted the stick-on sound deadening stuff from Autobarn and some of the fire proof stuff in the engine bay. I also made a new removable firewall mat for behind the carbie..

It made a big difference to the noise level inside the car..

ian, i would imagine that you VDP had similar stuf, that rubbery hairy thick stuff.

No actually Jed , it was about 10 mm thick and like a finely porous rubber mat , a little bit of give in it but not much , dread to think how much it all added to the weight of the car but it was quite heavy ...

aaahhhh ok, i guess that stoped it rasing the floor level quite so much then! i assume all these materials are still available, what do modern cars use?

Just a question on the same topic,does anybody know where you can buy those
firewall insulation mat's?,the one's that have the cutout's for the bonnet hinge's and
so-forth.

goodie, I used the stick-on sound proofing material then got an upholsterer to make up a new mat out of ute tarp stuff and stuck the soundproofing onto that.. Works great..

I need either a new one or an old one to use as a template so as i can get it covered
by an upholsterer ,can't be bothered bending over for hour's to measure and cut one
out.
