Hi AJ, I believe the change took place on British assembled cars with the introduction of the Mk2 in '67. It also comincided with the introduction of the nitrided crankshaft from the earlier Tuftrited one. I am not sure about Australian produced cars, but it looks as if your engine block could be correct to me. Regards Al |

The thick flanged blocks are MK2 engines, introduce in late 68 when the change over to the MK2 started. Doogie |

AJ, If it's a thick flange S block then the number has most probably been restamped. All OZ built MK1 S cars including the so called Mk1.5 like mine have the thin flange block with the 9FSaY prefix. Originally the thick flange block would have had an 9FXEY prefix and been attached to a 4 synchro box in an OZ Mk2 S. See if you can determine if the block has been resurfaced. The original surface finish is quite smooth and most resurfaced blocks have a coarser finish. 9FXEY block numbers start from approx 52xxx, 53xxx 9FSaY blocks finish at approx 51xxx, 52xxx. My late 68 build date MK1.5 block is in the 50xxx range and a MK2 block I have from a 3/70 build date car is in the 54xxx range. 66S, You have the cranks around the wrong way. The original cranks both the later crossdrilled and original non crossdrilled were made from EN40B alloy steel and nitrided. The later ones were tuftrided and some/all like mine were made from big journal 1275 12G1505A forgings but stamped with AEG480 part numbers. Hope this helps. RonR |

Many thanks for the info Ron , I will check the block . The car was produced around September 1967 and the engine number is 45*** , which seems to be about right . |
