Thought I better start a thread in here bout this, I have an ss clubby and apart from knowing 500? were made I have little other knowledge on them.

Can anyone fill me in as mine is far from original and I want to get it back to (close to) original spec.

Eagle

ABout 15 years ago my girlfriend at the time owned an SS mini, I knew nothing about minis back then (including how many diffirent engine sizes and shapes there are) but it was a sensational little car. I called NSW MCC and asked if an ss was something special. I WAS TOLD THEY WERE NOT. (Typical NSWMCC if it's not an original cooper S with the right hose clamps it does not count) but it was a cool little car. All these years later I find out there were only 500 made and they are a pretty special little thing.

Do you have any pix of yours? I think I have some old photographs of the car around somewhere I will see it I can find them. Does it have a pull bacl soft top?

......I am very happy within the club, with my clubman without standard hose clamps :D

I was at the MCC meeting last night and we were chatting about Chris' Clubman Sunshine. It is also similar to the SS Clubman. PM czerial, he is a wealth of knowledge on special edition clubbies.

I have nothing against people who are members of the NSWMCC and I'm happy you are happy, it's a club that has been around for many years so obviously does things right. I dont want to start a flamming match here abouut the NSWMCC, SO i would like to make it clear that my comment about NSWMCC is my personal opinion only and I dont expect everyone to agree with it and I'm happy if you dont, which is what makes free speach a wonderfull thing.

SO, LETS GET BACK TO TALKING ABOUT THE SS CLUBBY

the deference with a clubman ss and a clubman s is that it had an extra s. and black interior, just like the ls... back then they just kept throwing out limited editions of the same thing to try and revive the lagging sales. There was only 500 made, and that makes them rare in a std condition, but like most mini's they have probably all been modified to some degree.
The MCCNSW is pretty broad in its views, but an interesting fact is that in my 3 years with the club i have yet to see a std cooper 's' with the right hose clamps... true story. Every single one of them has been modified to some degree.
thats mini's though, it is hard to go std when there are so many fun bits to put on.

The SS also had the extra driving lights built into the grill and did they all come with the soft top ?

Can't be 100% sure but i think the driving lights where actually an option. Could be wrong though.

i was told the reason for there being a SS was that leyland had 500 shells, that were left out side during a mega hail storm, which caused the roofs to get damaged, and thats why they all have the fabric on the roof.
and that they were all brownish? and they come with the same mags as a 998LS.

okay, except it possessing a higher standard of equipment and trim, it was basically a mini s. It was the first mini with a twin-speaker sound system and alloy road wheels as standard. I think the LS released in early '77 was virtually identical.

I"ve heard bout the driving lights in the grill but i've not seen or heard of any with a vinyl roof.

Maybe I'll just get 2 S's from the miniwreckers and tack them to the grill-that oughta do it nicely!

i saw a 77LS in Sydney back at Easter time that was metallic blue, and had a blue soft top. i left a note for the guy to try and get in contact (wanted more info on the car etc), but he never got back to me. the note may have blown off - mini wipers aren't the strongest in the world! but the interesting part for me was that it had a soft top, and i couldnt for the life of me work out why. maybe the hail storm was the reason? does anyone know how common that was with the SS and LS models?

that LS is MINT!!

The Sunshine apparently had a vinyl roof too. Someone told me that when they took theirs off, there was evidence of hail damage to the roof.
