Post subject:  rover, indicator stalk Q

hey
im sure everyone has done it, traveling across a country road and an on coming car has splashed mud or thick layer of water over the car late at night, reach for the windscreen wiper switch and accidentally turn the lights off,(i had to open the door to activate the inside light  :? )

to prevent this from happening again i was wandering can you install a rover indicator and wiper switch cluster on a leyland steering column, or do a small mod to suit.

You may need to put a rover steering column in, too. I'd get in contact with Steve from Brickworx, he would know for sure.

You could always put some tiny LED's on the original switch panel, right above the switches. Have them so they come on with the headlights. SO then at night time, you will know that the second light is above the wiper switch, etc etc.

Or make a new panel with custom switches that operate relays instead of taking the full circuit load. You can then use illuminating switches....

OR

WIre up a momentary switch/button mounted somewhere that will activate the wipers for a single wipe when pressed. The button could be on the steering wheel (if its a sports wheel) or hidden on the underside of the column shroud...

OR

you could install another stick on the original column kinda like a cruise conrol stick from an aftermarket kit. The stick would then give you about 4 new switch positions for the wipers and whatever else you want.

I modified a Mazda Metro column stalk assembly once... it had a collar that was supposed to operate the rear wiper..... it became a switch to operate the fog lights when the wiper was removed.

You could always go to a wreckers, pick up any cheap Jap assembly, and try to modify it to fit........

The only annoying thing about the Rover stalks is that the indicators are on the left stick.

Ive had my BMW for over a year now, it has the indicators on the left, and for some reason I still turn the wipers on instead.

I never have any issue going form a car with indicators on the right to indicators on the lft (my colt to mums jeep or dads saab, for example). However after driving those cars and getting back into my car i screw up constantly. Luckily there is no left stick in my car.

(oh and i also accidentally unconciously conditioned myself into thinking that all autos have indicators on the left, so the first time i drove the bosses falcon... )

I had a Holden Vectra (which has reversed stalks on many models) and did this for 2 years after I sold it. I would go around corneres with flailing wipers signalling my intentions

ah ha, i remembered that i have a spare ra23 indicator stalk that is fine but all the parts a loose, hit a speed bump to hard and not only do i hit my head on the roof but i indicate right, im pulling it apart and using the parts, with this i will have my wiper switch and a hazard switch all mounted on the steering column,
