Hi Everyone,

I have been trying to fit my stepped drums on to my completely overhauled rear brakes. By Completely overhauled i mean new wheel cylinders, new linings (which i assume are too big perhaps second oversize ie) to suit 7.062" drums), the drums are brand new but have been machined out to 7.031" at trade school as I didnt want to replace the brand new linings. I got the linings and stuff for christmas and Dad just said he got "Oversized" ones so i thought they might be to fit 7.031" drums. They still wont fit.

So i tried fitting them with the old linings. They seemed to fit a bit better but they would have needed to be heavily hammered on to get them on the whole way. So I didn’t hit them as i didnt want to damage anything. Before I do anymore I will check with the shop that sold them to my Dad to narrow down the problem.

I have backed off the shoe adjusting screw on the back of the backing plate and the handbrake is off.

So is there anything I have missed which would increase the clearance between the drum and the lining? Or is it likely that I have second oversize drum linings ( I will find this out tomorrow to be certain)?

Thanks in advance!

Matt

I can't help with the oversize lining stuff, however what is the condition of the backplate for the assembly like? If it is damaged, bent, warped (had mine sandblasted and not exactly flat no more) then that won't help.
Do the pads fit one at a time? maybe that might help diagnose an issue.
Is the brake cylinder fully retracted?

Just thowing stuff out there.
:D

I have a standard drum - the other stepped drum that I didnt machine. i know has not been touched and is exactly 7".

I also have a set of drums that have only had 4 thou taken off of them

I have a set that I know nothing about - the ones that came off the rear of the car in the first place.

Hi Harley,

The backplate seems fine, the wheel cylinder is completely retracted.

I havent tried fitting the pads one at a time but will do that tomorrow evening

Thanks for the advice much appreciated

Matt

I'd put a shoe in the drum, check the curvature. If only touching at the ends they are too big.
Normally, you get drums machined to +1/32" or + 1/16", and the brake place suppies oversize shoes radius ground to suit.
If having trouble, take the shoes and the drums to a brake shop.
The drum and shoe sizes must match, otherwise either you will have poor contact and run out of adjustment real soon, or they just will not fit.

Ummmm wot the Doctor said and, do the shoes have a chamfer on each end :?:

(another important thing with new shoe linings is to make sure the shoes are centred before trying to force the drums on)

A bevel?? the linings should not be too sharp at each end or they will grab

late thought........ make sure the h/brake levers are fully released by removing the small cotter pins from the levers & h/brake cables disconnected (once you have followed previous advice re shoes & drums) before reassembly and adjusting. The brake drums should be adjusted individually without handbrake connected and once you are happy with drum adjustment, re-connect the cables. Replace rear wheels. Engage handbrake one notch at a time and compare the "load" on each wheel and equalize by adjusting the cables at the handbrake end. I like to get full lock-up by about the third notch :D

Well, I have been given +.060 linings so there is where i went wrong. I will get the old ones bonded to what I have machined them out too (7.031"), so that they fit.

I am not going to machine out my drums anymore - as it is a waste really.

Thanks for all your help,

Matt

Can you get the shoe friction material radiussed or ground down so that they will fit??
