Post subject:  Brake Conversion - Use 8.4 Disc & Calipers

Ok, I've read lots into all the brake conversions, but what about using stock 8.4 discs and 4pot calipers (KAD or something) or even standard calipers. Would the same still apply, a special braket and spacers??

Your thoughts?

The KAD calipers would bolt straight onto Mini disc hubs, as far as I know.

I realise that, thats why I want to know if its possible with a simple adapter plate (ie. to use drum uprights) as in the other conversions.

The whole point is to avoid the $350+ cost of each disc upright, and instead use common mini parts including the drum uprights I already have.

I would recommend using disc hubs.

A spacer on a drum hub would have to be so thin to fit between the hub and disc that it wouldn't hold up the caliper! :D

And don't even think about welding a lug onto the drum upright. Apart from being illegal, the swivel hubs are a grade of cast iron, which does NOT like bits being welded on.

How do I know this?
I have machined swivel hubs inside to fix `em when worn, as a machinist I know what cast iron turns like.

Thanks guys, I knew not to weld cast iron (although I did weld a small hole, breather??, in a 1-1/2 SU manifold).

So how do these other conversions work then? Is there more offset on the disc to allow a bigger spacer to fit between hub and caliper?

shallow-er disc rotor (hat)

What he said...^^
They are shallower because they use single piston sliding calipers, which stick outwards less.
So, there is room for a mounting bracket to bolt onto the outer face of the swivel hub. For a Honda setup they are about 7mm thick.
