My friend lives in Taiwan and he said used car markets in Taiwan (generally true in China too) are not as big and they prefer newer, more luxury and higher performace type of cars like SLKs, Ferraris, Skyline, Evos..etc. I dunno how much you will need to import them and do a conversion (since the steerings are on the left). However, it looks like you can get more for your money when you get an old mini in Taiwan than in Australia bacause of the labour and ex-rate. The mileage is smaller too! Here is the link of search(Note: page 1 and 2 @ the bottom): http://tw.search.bid.yahoo.com/search/a ... 2092098658 Some of the minis in this link: http://tw.f4.page.bid.yahoo.com/tw/auction/d23015503 (this one is just too cute) http://tw.f4.page.bid.yahoo.com/tw/auction/d13006641 (Mini selling coffee) http://tw.f2.page.bid.yahoo.com/tw/auction/b31239598 http://tw.f4.page.bid.yahoo.com/tw/auction/d23320261 http://tw.f4.page.bid.yahoo.com/tw/auction/d23337313 http://tw.f5.page.bid.yahoo.com/tw/auction/e16676836 http://tw.f4.page.bid.yahoo.com/tw/auction/d23470636 It doesn't sound like a bad idea to import some of them. Steering conversions require a complete strip down of the front of the car. Different brake lines and steering rack required. Thats about $200 plus labour (lots of other things to be relocated) Most of those are too new and cant be imported/registered, but can be chopped up and sold as parts. Even still..... add 1.5 grand per car (possibly more) for import fees and costs. It all looks cheap to buy over there, but it cost you just as much to bring em here. |

Friend of mine brought a M3 in from Honkers. Had to own it up there for 12 mnths prior to importing it to avoid some duty. He visits HK regularly with work and we have a friend who lives in HK and that is how he managed to get around that. The M3 is now registered in our friends name here in Aus, he is an expat, and he will eventually transfer title across and I suspect that will also cost. After all the toing and froing it cost around $6k to get it here so far and it is still not in his name. I guess to have a 96' M3 with extremely low kms and in A1 condition for around $25k - $26k is still worth it. And I get to drive it quite a lot and MAN does it go. |

You mean the M3 is still in HK now and the name is under him in there? ic...how come you get a chance to drive it? have you visit HK? Yea, since HK is a very small place and the public transport is very sound, they normally don't drive it up to high Kms. Also the parking spots are very hard to find there. Maybe I should try to look for some good cars over there when I go back. Do you know where he make contacts with to ask about all these costs and procedure for exporting it? RTA? By the way, I am a Honkie too (that's how they call themselves - you can misread and say Monkie, haha) as well as an aussie. Does your friend speak fluent Cantonese now? cheers, Ben |
