Post subject:  Mini Matic gearbox help please!

Hi, I have a 1970 mini matic which I bought (as an extra to the grey 64 850) with the motor and gearbox both out of the car. I was told the motor is reconditioned and in good running order, and that the gearbox had been reconditioned, but was still slipping in reverse. Havent done anything with it yet, can anyone suggest someone who can look at it for me in South East QLD? Our local mini specialist doesnt work with automatic gearboxes.

Best bet is to contact one of your local Mini car clubs....they should be able to set you right

From the Australian Morris 1100 workshop manual.

Quote:
Slip or no drive in reverse "R"
3) Check selector lever cable and transverse rod adjustment.
1) Check oil level.
5) Carry out oil pressure check.
9) Check location of sealing rings and / or joint washer under the oil filter head.
28) Remove and clean valve chest.
8) Check band adjustment.
35) Check feed pipes and sealing rings to top and reverse clutch and reverse band servo.
36) Remove the top / reverse clutch from the gear train and check that the bush in the reverse output shaft has not turned and shut off the oil feed to the top /reverse clutch.
37) Check the top and reverse clutch piston ring gaps and fit of rings in the piston grooves: check condition of clutch plates.

My guess would be the clutch plates or the band adjustment.
Does it do anything else wrong?
Does it change all gears properly? (especially the 3rd to 4th change)

That was the Mk1 matic...
Mk2 Matic was released just before the Mini K was, in 1969- with the same level trim.
check here- http://www.miniauto.com.au/home.htm click on Mini

According to TME last issue, they ran (maybe) until late 71 when the Clubby came out.

Yep, I've seen a 71 Matic with lift up Clubby doors. It was Khaki green everywhere under the trim, so it may have belonged to the Army!

OK then Morris 1100, you ask about 3rd to fourth change? Both my auto's (ones in a moke!) sort of screech a bit going from third to top, and also sometimes in first too.

I believe something is shared by first and top? :?

Graham,
1st gear has a one way `sprag' clutch, (works like a roller bearing with a ratchet in)- when it gets worn that can happen.
3/4 shift- if it `flares' it's usually the top & reverse clutch.
Our Morris 1300 auto did that when bought, 5 years later it still did it.
If it jerks or vibrates in 4th though, it's box apart time.
