The steering on the Blue Cow isnt, When turning the column clockwise the the turning effort on the wheel produces the occasional miss - in that it moves the column but not the wheels. Counterclockwise action has no such issue.

The splines on the column and the rack end are worn but none more so than any other.

If its is the rack - replament rack or rack renewal kit?

The metal splines in the column are a lot softer than the splines on the rack. Try replacing the column first. Its a lot easier and if it works then great.

A couple of small things - under no circumstances do you need to bang the column on. If it doesn't easily slide on (with the retaing bolt removed, of course) slightly slacken off the two U bolts holding the rack in place and rotate the rack until the column just slides on.

The column does on and off easily and the rack is centred so the column doesnt foul on the body.

can you push/pull the column in and out on the rack splines with pinch bolt done up?
If so the splines in column may have had it, or else there is no slot left where the pinch bolt is. If so, remove column. If splines inside are still there, put a 1mm thin cutting disc in Mr Anglegrinder and redo the slot.

When the bolt was tightened the column didnt move up and down. So it looks it tiem for a new rack

eta on price for a rack?

scott picked up a new rack for $280 - nt that he needed to replace it. It was his steering collumn that was the problem.

well I don't believe it's possible to strip the rack teeth, they are just too friggin' BIG.
It could well be the column splines gone, and all that's driving it is the friction from the clamp bolt.
Check them column splines, and the ones it mates with on pinion shaft.

Pull the column out, it will take you 5 minutes. Check the state of the spline.

When you reattach the rack , mark where the split is in the steering column on the racks spline with texta , tighten it all up and then test the steering . Then pull it apart again and see if it's moved .
