How to people accurately measure the amount of filler and hardener to mix up? The tin says a ratio of 2:100 I think and I have no idea apart from weighing it to get that ratio right.

Okay - I am not a panel beater so its only my experience. Firstly dont try any more bog than you can handle in a couiple of minutes.

Dollop out a couple of fairly big blobs (say, six inches by six inches by two inches high) I use old carboard boxes opened out to be like painters palletes. I then give the dollops two or three stripes of hardener and thoroughly and quickly mix it. Spread it out and then gather it up and drag it out again until you have an even pink colour.

Then apply it to the dents. Panel beaters will correctly tell you that bog should never be more than 2 mm deep. When you are applying it drag it in at least two directions to remove bubbles from it.

When it becomes harder to drag STOP - go and have a cup of coffee. It you have bog left over, you mixed too much in the first place. A couple of goes tells you what you can handle in the hardening time. File down the hardened bog on the car ( boat etc) and sand it and if necessary reapply to get a smooth finish.

Bottom line - two dollops of bog is two stripes of hardener

the stuff I use has a colour guide on the side of the tin, shows what shade of pink it should be when mixed. I use only a golf ball size glob of bog at a time.... if I MUST use it...

Only enough hardner to make it go hard.... If you put to much in later on after the car has been painted you will get bleaching from the hardner... And you will see exactly where you put the bog as the hardner will stain the paint above it... Not to much/....

Just out of interest for you Mike I've read that using cardboard or brown paper bags can actually weaken the bog. The acid (lye) that is still in the cardboard mixes with the bog making it weaker, for more info look here: http://www.autobody101.com/forums/about1401.html

Isn't it what the Panel beaters use all the time? I can see patches of them in the shells when I came across some panel shops.

Have you heard of anything call lead wiping?? is it like putting metal in holes and dents and cracks so you acheive a good result from actually using "metal" to treat "metal". That would be the highest quality, won't it?

By the way, anyone heard about good remarks about these 2 panel shops: http://www.maroubraauto.com.au/about.htm and www.vcdc.com.au ? cus I probably have to make up my mind soon. PM me if you have negative remarks cus it's kinda against the forum rules.

lead wiping is the old school bog, and basically its outdated and impracticle,

bog on cardboard is what most panelbeaters use, all the ones that i know any way

and the mixing ration will get in your head just a blob to blob!!!

once its on get a board file with coarse paper on it sand itand the hole will tell you where to put more bog and where to sand

In both cases the object is to fill minor irregularities in body panels. It is not for filling rust holes and deep cavenous dents. the amount used should never exceed two mm deep.

Yes lead wiping is old school and playing with lead in any form is dangerous. Playing with molten lead is even more dangerous. It causes stipple cell anemia which is where the lead particles get into the red cell of the blood and replace the heamoglobin. The heamoglobin, of course is the substance that carries oxygen around the body and into the brain. Lead does not carry oxygen and hence the anemia.

Plastic filler is better.
