Yep, won't budge! Glad it was the inner bearing not the outer, or else I might need a new disc brake hub too. If anybody in Canberra is a dab hand at installing bearing races, don't be shy coz I'm rubbish at it

Ant....I really think Wayne is your best bet. Do you have any pullers you could try to drag the bearing off with 
You could very carefully hacksaw almost through the race, then carefully spread it with gently taps from a cold chisel and mallet to break the race away. Clean it all up, look at what the bearing surfaces on the stub axle look like and polish away any ridges etc with very fine paper. Fit yer new bearings...hope this helps

I don't think it's rust, wouldn't surprise me though, that side has obviously copped some radiator overflow. Mick, there's no point trying to cut the bearing off, it's just a CV joint and it was knackered anyway. I just went and picked up a new one this morning. Wayne's away for the weekend, he's no help

Wayne's away for the weekend, he's no help So the CV joint is stuffed AND the bearing is welded on the stub...well you have done the right thing...should be back on the road in no time

I know most people dont have a lot of access to an oxy set but the easiest way to remove bearing cones is to use a cutting tip and slice the bearing cage at the top and bottom on each side so the rollers and cage comes off. Then change to a heating tip or large cutting tip. Stand the shaft so the bearing shoulder is up. Rotate the shaft and heat the inner race evenly. When it gets hot the race will simply drop off. If the race has already spun on the shaft it may be siezed and this may not work. If you heat the race too slowly the shaft expands at the same rate and the race doesn't fall off. To replace the bearing try preheating your oven to 100 odd deg, leave your bearing in there for 20 minutes and then it should drop straight on. Dont go past 130 deg or you may weaken the bearing and it turns a nice blue colour.  . Dont take too long to drop it on because they are only small bearings and they cool down quickly.
To put the cups back in the hubs a little easier put them in the freezer for a couple of hours and the hubs in the sun. Probably still have to give them a tap but not as much. PS haven't done this on a mini before but the principle is the same. |
