I have been driving my mini today and it was all going sweet, got home parked the car then went to drive it about 5 hours later, now there is a horrible rattle noise comming from the emgine, but when i push the clutch in the noise goes away, and as soon as i let the clutch out the noise comes back, i took the starter motor out, that looked fine, i put the car in gear and moved it forward without the starter motor, and you can feel it get stuck every rotation. Has anyone got any ideas, as to what this could be? |

figured out the problem one of the bolts that hold the timing flap shut was too long, so it was hitting the flywheel slightly, thats why when you pushed the clutch in the noise went away, the bolt must have never been very tight so i never got the noise at least i didnt need to take the engine out |

so the thrust bearings in your motor are getting past their used by date and it's allowing the crank to move sideways in the motor and returning it to it's usual position when you push your foot on the clutch...... that ain't good

thrust bearing are ok the bolt that i put on the timing cover hole was too long, and yesterday afternoon before the problem happened i had just tightened this bolt up. so now the bolt was in too far and hitting the bolts on the pressure plate |

I thought it'd started happening all of a sudden without any reason |

that ain't good No Simon, what happens is- as the clutch plate wears, the backplate + diaphragm/cover both move outwards. It must have been a bloody long bolt he had in there to hit though! |
