what's the best practice for reconditioning CV's ?

Mine seemed fine before JAM came off the road. I want to clean them and put new booties on them this week, but what else should I do or look for?

I usually just soak em in degreaser or whatever is your preference, then blow them out with an air hose. Repack them with fresh grease after you put the boots back on. There isn't much to them except the bearings. If there stuffed then you get another cv joint. Drum brake CV's for most people are a throw away part. Disc ones are a little more of a keepsake.

What Aaron said. But, consider getting some proper aluminium bands for the boots, cable ties in the kits are ****** useless.
Chong got his from that CV driveshaft place at the other end of James Ruse Drive, just past the M4. :wink: And Makka has a tool to fit 'em... get some more JD, eh.. 8)

book says tap the CV's off the shafts with a soft hammer. How hard should I expect to wack these, before it's too hard and something is not right? :?

I had a shot at it earlier and nothing much was happening.

Soft hammer does SFA unless its a biggie. I use a BFH.. if that don't work, the VBFH... :wink:

Hold it vertical with the CV down.. and do watch yer toes... :shock:

No BFH needed for install, only a SFH.. you need to centre the circlip with your fingers as you tap the shaft in gently. :wink:

When I changed my CV's I used a slide hammer attached to the shaft. Easier than BFH if you have access to one.

I used a pine log to get em off. Pine log step, hold drive shaft either end. wrap it in a rag so it doesn't add to the clay when it hits the dirt next to the log. one swift wack against the log and off it comes. work evrytime. Leave a great mark on the log for the crap landlords to sort out when i leave!
