Here's a link I found:

http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21236&highlight=running

I find that alot of different people do alot of different things (only minor) when running in an engine, it just depends on the engine builder and what they like to do. You can see that all the posts have things in common - just have a read. Hopefully it should give you a bit of an idea to follow.

Did you build the engine or did someone build it for you?

We are going to build the engine ourselves, but that link seemed to contradict all I had ever heard hence the question. Thanks for your help.

The qualfier is modern machining/honing techniques and metallurgy.
Since it's highly unlikely you're going to bore and hone the block yourself, probably best to be guided the engine reconditioners. But then you pays your money and takes your chances.
A couple of other points.
Don't use friction modified oils for running in. How do I know?
Be absolutely fanatical about cleanliness. Surgical cleanliness is needed here. If in doubt clean it again. Just one bit of dirt can ruin a bearing or piston.

I personally have never heard of anyone running in an engine like that. Its your car and your money so run it in anyway you like. Maybe try calling some of the high profile mini mechanics in the mini community and ask them what they do.

Run em in hard, they stay hard.

My ~$5000 1330cc: Saw 3000rpm for 20 mins, cooled down, retorqued head. Warmed back up, then given a dozen hard revs to about 5000rpm. After that, checked the jetting and it saw 6500 about 40-50 times at full trottle. Got a total of 119.7hp. All on engine dyno of course.

Changed oil and filter, went into the car and have been driving her hard ever since. 600 miles down the track now and still going strong. No smoke, very little blow by so hardly any crank case pressure, uses very little oil, nearly no oil at all. Changed the oil at 300 miles and looked like brand new oil.

I won't be giving her any other running in anymore, will just drive her...

Yeap this is how Graham runs in all engines, from minis to formula juniors and V8's.

Ask Chris Zerial how his daily driver is running after a few thousand miles, it would have been run in the exact same way...

yup it was run in on the dyno by graham.

Still purring along well. Oil has little if ANY metal bits on the magnetic sump plug at oil changes and quick as ever.

The one thing that you have to remember is that to run in an engine properly, you need to put it under load, so that it can push the rings out and allow them to bed in properly. By controlling the different amounts of load during the dyno time it is very accurate and better than just driving it up a hill a few times, but many people do this with good results im sure

When we rebuild engines at work they get fired upon the dyno, pretty soon they are run at 1/2 load (expected HP) for 1/2 hour. The filter gets changed and cut open for inspection. Then if all is OK they get run at 3/4 load for 1/2 hour. Then we check full load and set the fuel for the final time. That is it for running in, they are painted and sent to the customer.
