Got a big leak from the diff where the shaft comes out on the passenger side.

After studing the an exploded diff diagram the only gasket I cam see on the end cover. Is there a seal in the end covers?

Yes there is the gasket and there is a seal that the output shaft runs in, they can leak too.

I think your problem is vegetable uni's.

Is it leaking from the shafts or somewhere else?

Yes , what type of inner joint does the moke have (you'll need to order it to suit the appropriate type , I think they're different) ? Regardless of type there is a seal that fits around the shaft of the cv or rubber uni/hardy spicer yoke and you need to take the drive shaft out to replace it . It's easily done with the engine in situ though , just seperate the ball jounts on the offending side and pull the driveshaft out of the yoke and remove the yoke or jemmy the cv off the diff shaft . Then remove the old seal etc .

at the shaft output from the diff on the passenger side. I will get a better idea when all the oil runs out

The volume of the leak suggests a seal rather than a gasket

Oil seal is the same for pot joint and rubber cross uni but different for Cooper S hardy spicer.

its a rubber cross uni. Thanks

Not the problem. The leak is coming from the block to sump/gearbox mating. So eithe rthe gasket has gone  or loose bolts (I hope).

The oil was running down the gearbox and diff and over the shaft outputs making it look like the the diff seals were leaking.

Try checking the bolts. Mine did this and there was a whole bolt missing! Previous owners!

Otherwise it could be the diff oil seal which means driveshaft off...

Yeah , tighten the bolts again and then check to see your engine breaters aren't blocked up as well .

Those seals (and both crank seals) tend to go go hard & leak if the engine hasn't been running for quite a while. Good idea to replace them before putting the engine back in

Been there, done that.

not the seals nor the gasket between the block and gearbox. Its the tappet covers, no gaskets and what are the implications of the breather being closed up.

OK , you mean the two inspection type plates at the rear of the motor near the fuel pump rather than the tappet cover on top of the motor ? There should be a cork gasket under each one but they tend to fall apart when old . As for the breathers , if they are blocked , older motors can build excess pressure in the crankcase and push the oil out anywhere with an old seal/gasket that's under the oil level or regularly splashed .

You may get away with just tightening up all the gearbox bolts....hopefully the O Ring has been put in...do you know ifyou have oil pressure :?:

yep the pushrod imspection plate is what I mean. The volume of oil tends to indicate that it needs the breather. So I will add some new gaskets and unblock the breather and give it a whirl. Thanks
