Is it true that as soon as minis get some rain or water on them they have some problems.

No or yes. Are u driving a well maintained Mini or a heap of sh*t mini? My car never has problems when its wet while being washed in the driveway....

My mini is no piece of crap... however it leaks like a mofo around the doors when i hit it with the hose. The roof gutters protect it from rain coming in though. I've never had issues in the wet while driving however if you get a bit over enthusiastic when washing the car it's possible to hit the wrong spots and cause it to not start for 10min or so. ie: hosing the grille area is to be done with due care.

When we had a very 'monsoonal' day in Adelaide, I had a woman in my car... and it died.


My mate came along in his mini, and got me some WD40 from West Lakes which was a 5 min drive, and we were on our way again

(The woman knows the typical Mini traits, so it was all good)

WD40 fixes all.

Little story here.

I used to drive my car rain or shine no problems with the good ol' 850 dizzy. But the first drive in medium rain (first drive in any rain for that matter) with the nissan dizzy and it would die below about 1200 rpm and splutered like crazy underload. I barely made it to work (turned a 5 min drive into a 20 min one, yes I was late). Now I have a dodgy plastic shield, but it works!

You see I the Nissan dizzy suffers more from the rain due to sticking out further, the morris one used to hide behind to oil cooler.

Never had any problems in the wet / rain, and even after;

1) Hosing the radiator grille directly to remove dead bugs

2) Steam cleaning the engine with a plastic bag around the dizzy.

I'm running a Rover electronic dizzy.

One should never skimp on the zip ties.

I've not only pressure washed a mini, but lifted the bonnet and done in there.
Fired up without issues. Engine had points and cracked cap I later found.

Actually the last time I had a water/dizzy problem, it was until 2 hours after I drove home from the car wash that it wouldn't start! It was fine straight after the wash!

Good god willy - you cant tell us on a pubic forum that you flashed it - its just not kosher to do that. Now that you have your mini traits tuckled away.

Yes- minis do suffer problems in the wet. Predominantly its the distributor. Its in the front and faces the grill which means when ever there is rain or you go through a water crossing then the dizzy gets wet. This shorts the points etc which means simply that forward ongoing motion is impeded.

There are several ways to water proof the electrics very satisfactorily.

Perishing windscreen rubbers, leaking heater cores and rust in the floors and kick panels does let water into the cabin and if not fixed then eventually the car is going to have rust problems but apart from the above a mini is no worse off than any other 40 year old car.

What's with people trying to be so super freakin smart all the time... When did i say i washed it during water restrictions? geez people *sigh*

My moke leaks really badly

I have a story.

Back in '69 my mate bought a brand new Mk11 "S" from BMC Hillcrest in Adelaide.
During a warranty check he complained the car pulled to the left when braking in the rain. The Service Manager's advice was:

"well, don't drive when its raining"

Another story...

Two or three years back on one of the club runs it poured non stop for 4 hours. There was about 25 minis on the cruise and just about every one of them got water inside the cabin - one person actually discovered that when the water level on the floor gets to about 2 inches it runs out the gear stick hole

Anyway, the only mini that had electrical problems was a SPi Rover that got water inside the door which shorted out the central locking solenoid, which in turn did funny things to the alarm/imobiliser which then "imobilised" the engine
