Driving to work today all my electrics just stopped working. The car kept running but seemed a little ruff (This may just be me thinking that). The battery started the car and the CD player seemed to work fine ( i turned this off soon after noticing the problem though). All my guages stopped working and speedo got stuck on 25 mph. Interior light also stopped working. Brake and indicators stopped working also

I am at work now and wont be leaving till 7 so thought i would see if anyone could think of some things to check. I think it could be a fuse or alternator has died. The alternator ( off a commodore i believe) has a light thatcomes on when ignition is turned. When the light is unplugged the car wont charge. I will check this also.

Any ideas?

DAVID

The only problem is there should be several different circuits involved there but check both the main fuses , no idea on the speedo getting stuck as it's mechanical and not electric .

Dave, check / change your fuses, dude. I always carry a box of spares as my indicators (and therefore reverse and brake lights :?) like to blow at inconvenient moments.

CHANGE YOUR FUSES!

Not so happy now, am i?

*bows* :D

Ye olde fuses can be sneaky at times. Even if mine doesn't look screwed i just change it anyway. :D

Glad to hear it's fixed.

You can't blame Lucas for shoddy maintenance. 8)
A lot of cars have dodgy fuseboxes after all this time.
The worst I had was a Ford F100 that the fuseholders got soft when they got hot and then the fuse falls on the floor. The fuse box was located near the throttle cable and when the cable frayed the loose bits of wire touched the live wires and made the throttle stick!

ohh i didnt realise you are meant to change the fuse before they blow. How is a fuse blowing shoddy maintenance? If anything is to blame it is my lack of experience. This is the first fuse to ever blow in any car I have ever owned and I am a self proclaimed below amateur mechanic

Agreed. :D I'm not really angry with Lucas - they're just an easy target!

Floss: Anything electric goes - first stop is fuse box. :D

Isn't a blown fuse, regardless of age, just a symptom of another electrical problem somewhere within the system? What I'm trying to say is that it might be wishful thinking to blame the problem on the fuse, and if you want to avoid a repeat you need to track down the cause. 8)

Quite often it isnt necessarily the fues that "blows",,, more often than not it`s the corrosion that builds up around the contacts over the years on electrical items that causes it, dirt, grit, corrosion, & loose worn tired old fues holders, all are happy to be the culprit at some stage or other & often "BECAUSE" of the corrosion the current becomes higher trying to jump over/around/through all the crap at the contact points that "then" maybe the fues blows.

& also you have the crappy fueses themselves, they don`t make fues`s like they used to & often you`ll test a fues that looks sweet but it aint.

everyone should be cleaning their fues blocks & re-tensioning the tabs that hold the fueses in place & allways carry spare fueses

& yes, of course there is allways the good possibilty of there being a problem/short in the system somewhere to cause the fues to blow so never count that out, but i always check the fues & fues holder/block assy first, just clean & tighten the tabs before u start to blame something else or look elsewhere.

Lucas wasn`t really that bad of a fella, he just didn`t expect to be around this long or he`d have produced an automatic corrosion erradication device built into the elec system of every car he fitted out >-) now that was funny :-)

Yep, the poor old 4FJ fuse block is getting on.......over 40 years now?

The much maligned Lucas electrics were built to the price BMC/BL demanded, not built to the quality Joseph would have preferred
