Post subject: | Uprated drive flange for Honda discs |
Hi all, i have the honda city brake disc & calipers fitted to my race mini. It has 10" wheels. As mentioned by Dr Mini the drive flanges( modified drum type)are a bit weak. I checked mine & found 1 was cracked all the way around. My question is can I use the 1300 type CV joint & a mini LS or metro drive flange. The flange would be machined to take the honda disc on the outside. Which drive flange can i use? Metro vented, non vented or LS I would prefer one that spaces the disc away from the hub as the caliper mounting plate is only 3mm thick. Are all the LS & metro flanges have the same stud PCD as 10" mini wheels? sorry for all the words, but i hope you get the picture ![]() |

you *should* be able to use a drive flange as per Cooper S - it mounts the same way as the drum one, the later 1275GT/post '84 etc. brake setup uses a flange that the rotor bolts to.... the honda city brake setup isn't known in Australia - Civic conversions are the popular choice, but they can't be run with 10" wheels.... do you mind posting pictures of your set up, I am ultra interested! |

Actually I think you'd find it difficult to use 'S' type flanges as the studs are mounted in the rotor not the drive flange. The 8.4 drive flange does however have the studs in the flange but I'm unsure how difficult it would be to modify it so it was like the drum brake flange. You'd have to think about your wheel bearings too. You say you're running a 3mm caliper mounting plate??? that seems VERY thin... would be great to see some pics though |

Why not just replace the drum brake hub? |

I agree, it would be easy to get new ones turned up from stronger material and made with a thicker flange. The spline in the drum flange is a standard SAE one I think, it would not be hard to duplicate. ![]() |

hi I would love to post photos but dont know how. This set up works really well, pulls up quickly with no fade when racing. This uses 25mm spacers on the wheels, with no bearing problems. Cooper S flanges are no good with these discs as the flange needs to have studs, thereas cooper S discs have the wheel studs fitted. With my set up the disc is sandwiched between the flange & wheel I dont want to get flanges made when i can buy 1275LS or metro items for under $100 ea new. What I want to know is are these flanges the same bolt pattern as 10" wheels & are the offsets the same as i dont know which to choose. The 3mm mounting plates for the caliper seem fine. Just look how thick the backing plate is on drum brakes. thanks Stewart PS I am in Rotorua. |

Hi all, im looking at the doing the the honda civic conversion aswell but different model i think and was going to use the S flanges. Would'nt it be possile just to put wheel studs through the S flange itself? ![]() |

I only know the 8.4 mini flanges and the 8.4 Metro turbo flanges so I won't comment on non-turbo Metro flanges. The 8.4 mini flanges and metro turbo flanges have the same wheel stud pattern. The Metro ones use metric bolts to hold the disc on. The holes through the flange for the bolts may be a slightly different diameter from the mini but I've never measured. The Metro Turbo flanges have the wheel mounting surface 12mm further outboard. They have a larger outside diameter and come with 4 castellations that engage the centre of the Metro wheels. Often they are seen with the outside diameter machined down and the castellations removed as this is how they work best on a mini and is how some UK spares shops sell them. The bearing interface and CV interface is identical so the same "disc brake" conical washer, hub nut and CV combination will work with either. Do a bit of a search, I've posted heaps of crap about brakes on here with links to various photos and so have many others. Metro turbo flanges machined as described above: ![]() Same, without disc or caliper ![]() 8.4 Moke disc & flange ![]() I hope this helps. M. |

hi thanks for the info As i will be bolting the honda disc to the outside of the metro flange the std metro bolts wont be needed Looks like the metro turbo have more outward offset It is still not clear to me that the metro & mini 8.4" set up has the mini 4" PCD & 3/8 studs ![]() The problem with using the cooper S flange is fixing the wheel studs to the flange & guess these would need to be tack welded in. |

Those wheel studs are heat treated, no way I would weld them. It's illegal to weld suspension parts here... You could redrill the S drive flange further round with the right diameter holes for Mini wheel studs, and press them in as normally done on a drum drive flange. ![]() |

thanks again That extra offset on the metro turbo flange may be a problem for me as it spaces the disc out Has anyone else done this set up? You should have seen how much the drum brake flange was welded up to form a spigot for the disc to locate on Lucky i checked the flange for cracking I never felt good about racing on slick tyres with those weak looking flanges, but they seem to stand up to the loads in mini 7 racing in NZ, with the front drum brakes |
