Now I need to know what is the difference between rubbing back the existing paint work and priming over going to bare metal and priming? What are the pros an cons of each? Cheers Ian |

my opinion on painting a lil car, is that dont paint one section u may as well paint the whole car cause on a small car u can notice the differences alot easyer |

I would suggest paying a panel beater to do it. If its not done correctly, then it will start to bubble with surface rust under the paint and u will end up having to paint it again. |

going back to bare metal will give a better finish, and will also find any problems that are lurking under the paint, however it is ALOT more work. for a normal, used car, just rubbing back, priming and painting will be absolutly fine, going back to bare metal wont make any normal person think higher of you, it wont help you get girls, and it dosent make great dinner conversation, it will just keep the picky people happy, and mby give you peace of mind. if the cars straight and tidy, just rub it back and paint over it, especially as you are painting in the same colour. |

If the existing paint isn't too bad - ie no cracks and slight rust coming through ect, I'd hit it with wax and grease remover, rough up the paint with sand paper on a block and prime away. If it's your first go at painting, I'd do this. Pick up some painting experiance and if your ever going back to bare metal later - strip the entire car (inside & out). A busy couple of days should see it looking good! Bare metal will take ages + more costs. Just check with someone in the know, the po of my van sprayed acylic over enamel (no primer) and the paint started flaking off after 12 months. I guess a good primer allows it to all bite together. I had to go back to metal to fix it. |

My car wasn't taken back to bare metal because the paint on it wasn't too bad - I wouldn't worry about all the extra work of bare metal unless it was really needed - to fix a underlying problem. |

Like minivanman says it totally depends on your existing paint work, your experience, how much time you have, and the level of finish you want at the end. Have you seen/found the post on paint stripper? (I looked but couldn't find it again) Didn't use it as I was already done but I think I will in future. If you dont go all the way back try getting a 2 pack primer as these stick pretty well. I guess it also depends on if you are taking the glass out as I see this as a decision on how seriously you want to tidy the car up. |
