Post subject:  Another leaky exhaust

guys, Adam (Citric) and i are going to fix his leaky exhaust this weekend,
leaking from the manifold and exhaust flange.. i'm hoping there is no hole

its a stock crappy manifold, just a quick question so that we dont have to pull the thing apart and find out we are missing something

is there a flange gasket between the manifold and the exhaust flange.. and what would be the 'correct name' at a mini place for it if there is.. the local mini mechanic is support crewing at rally australia for some reason today and the lady in the shop has no clue

and if there is no gasket, what can we use to seal it? just some copper gasket maker?

Err, sorry, but I disagree. I have never seen a stock Mini manifold with a flange gasket. The end of the downpipe is flared and fits over the manifold. There is a groove in the clamp that holds the two together. No flange gasket at all.

Remove clamp, drop engine pipe down.
Clean up flare on engine pipe and outlet on manifold
Position trolley jack under engine pipe
Smear a little exhaust joint cement on the manifold outlet and the engine pipe flare. (You don't need heaps, just a smear!)
Jack up the engine pipe to meet the manifold and position it nicely mated together.
Smear some exhaust cement in the groove of the clamp.
Refit clamp and remove trolley jack.
Start engine without revving it. Give it five minutes to heat up the exhaust and cure the exhaust cement before reving the engine to check for leaks.
If no leaks - you're all done!
