First off. I have acquired myself a good range of HIF6 carbies. I got two complete ones and a 3rd arriving this week, from eBay. The origins of these carbies is quite unknown (as tags are missing) but one was used on a 1200cc motorbike quite a while ago. The other, I have no idea.

I'm going to mix and match parts to make the best one.

My question is, do you need to use a spring loaded needle which to me just seems to self centre it. The book of Su carbies that I bought says for HIFs you can only get factory needles. Will this be a problem from a performance perspective? I have a superchargered setup nearly ready to be dynoed, jsut finalising carbies. I managed to make an HS6 fit, but had to space it too far forwards, making bonnet clearance a thing of the past, so I do want to use HIF6. (This is on the SC12 kit BTW)

Final question.

I am looking for a good (rolling road) dyno tuner in SA, preferably the Northern area to set my car up, who have SU (expecially HIF) knowledge and know a bit about forced induction. I have been recommend to a dyno plae at Kent town, but was hoping for a closer place, also the Kent Town place is very expensive!

Cheer, Tim.

I have been saving.

My dad had some work done on his stroked rover V8 at the Kent Town place about 60 years ago, he said it was good. But costly, Ben said they are good but costly same with the very helpful owner, of 'Miniac'. So I guess I'll be going there.

But I guess "you get what you pay for" under these circumstances.

I used Blackwood Dyno.

Very helpful, and a 40% power increase for the $400 tune.

:D

Hi, the downside on spring loaded needles is that they wear the jet, but with HIF's you have to use them. If you want i can send you a .xls with a list of HIF's needles and their specs, i don´t know if all of them are available but many of them are .

Cheers,
Luis

With your needles you will find probably that a HIF can only take spring loaded ones.
But they can all be made into a spring loaded just by changing the top peice that the spring attaches to. More than likely the dyno operator will modify your existing needle as it probably will be too lean.

Ok, I'll call some dyno places. I will put the spring loaded needle in. I have 'SU Carberetters Tuning Tips and Techniques" but would really like the .pdf file. My email is [email protected] .

I will ask the dyno people able needle modding etc.

About insurance, LOL no issue what so ever, I am already paying for 'modified' with Vigil. And I asked them, they said no problem, no extra premium, as long as it's road legal and you inform us.

Yes it's road legal, as it's pre Jan of 1971.

My insurance is rather expensive, at something silly like $1200 a year, with an excess of around 700. This covers my car for 10 grand. (comprehensive :D ) and a free window a year plus road side assistance and retention of wreck. Prettywell same deal as Shannons but more expensive as I can't go with Shannon's being under 19. Hopefully this year it will be cheaper as it's insuranced, and registered in my name, and I had no accidents or whatever.

OK what's happening is pretty sorted now.

I took an HIF6 into the Kent Town Auto Tune or something (can't remeber the exact name but it was the one Ben Afford told me to go to.) And the bloke was real nice. He is going to rebuild my HIF6 that I took to him, with some parts off of another I have, which I will drop in on Friday. I went to Morris Mania firs to buy a little this and that, and Adrian was nice enough to diret me to the dyno place as the shop I went to before to buy a ram tube from told me the wrong address.

But this is what's happening, HIF is being rebuilt, should be done in a week, with a 'close enough needle' (as he has done a few Mini's of similiar spec) and a few minor SU mods, so i can get going. The after it's going, I can book for dyno and tune time. So all together I give the finished product. say 3 weeks. The dybo guy is confident in the 'sc12 kit' that '92' on this forum makes and is expecting decent power outputs. As he reckons he knowns what you need to do to the HIF to get it good enough for the job (mostly that the HIF6 doens't give enough fuel!).

Updates will come later in the my 'gallery' called "Tim's Mini XJD 035" or something like that! :D

Dyno didn't. I'll post when it's all actaully done.

Kent Town Auto Tune is currently working on getting ym carby good, and another Ausminier (I'm 99% sure It's who I think it is), but won't name them, just incase it's all a suprise. In getting supercharged cars going.

Problem, HS6 doesn't fit under bonnet, and the guy, who experts in SU's says that the HIF is better for this aplication. Also we are using sold needles, he reckons spring laoded are crap.

Main problem, there is no stock HIF6 (or 44 or HS6) jet or needle combo that will give enough fuel to run the car. Air however is no issue at all.

I am using a short dash top HIF6, on a normal style bottem, with solid needles etc. A total hybrid. The Man who is doing all this is highly preoccupied, he had four mini's in, when I went to check up on progress, one being an Ausminier, with Ben's kit too, but on a small bore, I'm interested to see how that goes.

It'll be at least another week till new parts from Su Midel arrive, then who knows... Probably a week after that to book in for dyno. These engin project take a lot of time, Spaceboy, as you know.

I was told a week, plus another, but things haven't gone the way the should have with carbies. I now have 3 HIF6's 2 HS6s and whole bunch of other sizes too....

Ok I thought I PMed him, the PM is in my 'outbox', but not in my 'sentbox' so I guess it didn't send.... :?

So without conformation of it being this person at all I will just say.

The number palte of the car was SOX 669 (may have been SOX 629 but still SOX nonetheless)

It was an early 850 body, looked awesome!

Hmm let me think.... who else on here recently has talked about this in SA also...oh yeah 'SOX 61'.

BTW SOX 61, ur car is beautiful. 8)

Yes spaceboy he will be more the able to help you out. He couldn't remeber much at first, but thanks to SOX he remembered alot about 'Miniac' and Ben Afford. He said "Ben is great craftsmen with these kits". I agree.
