Howdy, Any advice or tips for the weekend? Smartarses welcome, but some real responses wouldnt be bad either. I have new engine (basically) and new engine mounts. Start talking people! Peter. |

Screw the speedo cable onto the gearbox while its hanging above the engine bay.... Saves trying to reach down to it up later on. |

Don't buy the mounts with `captive nuts', the nuts are chinese cheese... and they are way too thick. Buy some stockers, then come see me.

Doogie says don't try to install two new engine mounts at the same time, do one, get it in and settled and come back and changed the other one later. I agree with Doc, make sure they are not captive nut type before you start to use them. KB |

Doogie says don't try to install two new engine mounts at the same time, do one, get it in and settled and come back and changed the other one later. Try for a good condition s/hand one - Doc, Graham, chong.......someone will have one you could probably have for nix. KB |

Ya Thanks Kev, will sort something out, ta for the tip. Just gotta hope the RE intake + SU will fit without firewall mods It should since its a clubby but ... but ...

Read / apply the "RADIATOR EASY OUT / IN" advice in the howto section. I'd forgotten how much fun it can be untill I put my engine back in! Will look at this mod next time it's out. Check the gearbox seal for leaks (where the rod connects). Replace any worn cv boots etc. |

Argggg!!!! Thought I'd lost it after years of not working Minis... took me a week to get the horrors in..... and that ended up using clamps to pull the engine into line.. ( I'd remembered them being a pain but not that much! ) All becomes clear...... so only partially my fault
As I have to pull the engine out again due to blown out gearbox gasket (I'm told Locktite 518 is the go) - will change em again to normal... (or good old fashioned home made captive).... was dreading the install process again... now can breath a little easier....

I dunno!!! I had old engine mounts on mine and it was still a b&*ch of a job regardless... I reckon just use new mounts. If you are going to have the same problems anyway, you'd want new ones in there so you don't have to change them again anytime soon. That's my opinion... |

I would use new, but avoid the captive nut ones. The one on my car stripped a thread, bolt won't come out, Mr Anglegrinder will have to sort it next time. 
I DO like captive nuts- I just tack weld 5/16 UNF nuts inside the standard mount before fitting. Done it for the last 40 years, no problem.

But we do!!! some of the newer mounts are cheap crap...I have seen an example where the rubber parted from the metal...get the best available

I believe genuine Rover ones are NLA, so most mounts for sale now are the cheapo stuff.
