Has anyone in SA had any experience with Historic number plates?

I am looking into getting a set for the project car..

More details for us in other states?

Just for info sake for us Victorians... if you have original number plates that are looking a bit worse for wear, vicroads will get copies made for $25ea. I was told when inquiring about my vans plates (they are the original plates) that they will reproduce them, meaning the white paint isn't reflective... so a replica of the original plate.

I just want to know that you understand what historic plates are intended for. The specific detail in the regulations may vary from state to state but the concept does not.

The historic plates is a permission to drive an unregistered vehicle on public roads on specific occasions, such as club runs, parades and to and from things like show and shines.

Because of the rising costs of insurance, registration and other associated costs, the system was developed to kept historic assets as a going concern. That is; as drivable vehicles. A number of people have seen this as a cheap registration for a daily driver and otherwise abused the system and have seriously predudiced government support for historic plates.

The upsides are that you have a very cheap registration that enables you to enjoy your pride and joy. The down sides are that the number of times you can drive this pride and joy are severely limited and monitored. The people who administer the historic plate system, both at government level and at club level take a very stern view of the misuse of the historic plates.

If you want to put a car on historic plates then good but be very aware of what the system is for and about and play it within the rules.

The actual requirements are available as a download on each of the relevant state transport authorities websites.

For what its worth, I am a plate registrar for our local veteran car club and active in the politics of the system.

Historic registration differs from Historic number plates.

In Adelaide, we have both.

last time i enquired about those platesyou had to write in to Transport SA and tell them why you want them, and then they decide whether you can get them or not. But they do look great on a classic

The NSW gov auctions off the historic plates periodically and they go for big big money

And the NSW transfer fees are horrific , the less numbers of digits, the higher the fee (can't remember but it's a fortune to transfer the single digit one's ...) .

I knew a person who had two letters only on his plate (NSW) cost him a pretty penny too, $1580

The confusion is easily made. In NSW, the system is NOW called CRS (concessional registration scheme) and apart from historic cars, a sub group also covers forklifts, tractors, JCB's etc). The old scheme, used to be called Historic plates, which was where each club purchased and issued a numbered plate (usually three digits) hence the confusion.

You can still buy original issue plates at auction and put them on a car with full registration, but as people said, in NSW the really old ones are super expensive (up to several hundred thousand dollars) at auction.

But that's the normal custom ones I think , have a look at the lower part of this page and see the transfer fees for a car with a single digit plate (referring to the original NSW number plates which were numbers only ...) , almost $8,000 :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock:
