Some time back (like a couple of years) I came across a web site that for a fee would trace the history of a Victorian Registration number and give like a "title chain" report and whether or not the car is still registered and or when it was last registered and to whom. I kept the link at the time but several hard disk crashes later that has been lost. From what I remember I don't think it was a govt site or if it was it I don't think it was under the regular transport site.

I've Googled and search but can't locate it again - anyone know of it?

I think that link has been lost forever. I remember that as well as the fact that each of the state transport authorities would sell you "a history". A couple of very messy stalkings and other non intended events put a stop to those histories. Of course aided by privacy laws.

These days, police and transport have a audit trail on who and why a set of details was activated on the computer records but as a hint, insuance companies have access to or their own sets of records and have no such restrictions. Its a case of who you know.

Hi, don't know if this info is any good to you because I'm not sure what you need to find out but anyway; I gave Vicroads my engine number and for $19.00 had an archive search done. My car had the wrong number plates on it and they gave me a letter with the five different number plates my car has had since new and told me the original number. They even gave me a copy of the original 1969 rego papers from the police station (before they had a vicroads it was done by the police). The number hadn't been re issued and so now I have the original plates back on my car (that cost about $300!) The only thing they were not allowed to tell me (it was blacked out on the paperwork) was the name and address of the original owner and which car yard they bought it from. The police station was near the Goulds BMC dealership in Northcote so I guess that is where it was. All the engine and body numers matched the car so it was well worth it. I was told it had to be a written application to the Manager of Archives, Vicroads, Denmark Street, Kew, 3101. Hope this is of some help. Cheers.

Thanks for the reply - I rang VicRoads and the lass I got onto was very helpful and got caught up in the whole nostalgia bit. Before taking my money she rang archives to check if there was any info available and as there wasn't she said there was no need to pay for a search. She then searched and found the numbers were up for sale and checked and they still had my details on file from when we lived in Victoria and so she update the records with my Queensland drivers licence and address so that when I go back to buy the plates I just have to quote my Qld licence number.

My car was also bought (and sold back to) Goulds of Northcote
