hi again just have to say cheers for the help with the tyre issue.i seem to have a fuel sender issue i belive like i fill the mini up and it does show full but when i drive like 100m down the road it show half a tank like u can watch the gauge drop so quick thats y i think there might be something wrong with the foalt if it uses a float that is.is there anyone in aus selling new ones or something else i could use?

It might yet be something electrical.

There's two items that stuff up the gauge reading apart from the gauge itself. One is the voltage stabiliser and two is the fuel sender.

If it's working when stopped or at idle, but plays up when the car is jumping along down the road, it may be that the fuel sender in the boot is playing up. They're pretty crude. They're awash in petrol until the tank is less than half full all the time and a minimum of 27 years old. You could try replacing this or taking it apart and cleaning it out. They're easy to overhaul if they're still working, you just take a little emery to the contact inside the sender and generally clean the connections up.

Also check the wire connections are nice and firm as things flying around the boot tend to loosen them a little.

It amy also be the voltage stabiliser, but if it works at stop, it should work as the engine revs come up as well.

dwr not the only one my fuel sender mite be playing tricks on my as well, ill fill the mini up and the gauge goes to half way only and then i think it has to be atleast 3 quaters empty the gauge is on empty and still going, that and among the other gauges i have to fix

Mine did that for years until I found what it was.. not the sender or gauge.
The faster I drove the lower it read, then when stopped it would come up to correct. WTF!!!??
Anyway, I found it was the voltage stabilizer on back of speedo thet feeds 10V to the gauges. Vibrations of car made it give less volts.
I got a new electronic one off `wombat' on ausmini, it's been reading right ever since.

Sorry price is now $20 inc postage - the unit is now a better and more stable output and involves more time and parts to put together - besides the main component is sourced from a different supplier and they are more expensive

Well worth it, I reckon a NOS original would cost more if you find it, and not work as well.
The original one worked much like a blinker can, had a bimetal strip which opened/closed to act as a `voltage regulator'.
1950s technology. Car radios had valves back then....
