Hi guys I was just wondering if anyone has an opinion of original 7" disc brakes? I seen some on ebay fairly cheap. Would they be ok for a 1275 ?

I don't know first hand, but from what I hear and read 7" discs arent even adequite for a 998 engine. Drums have known to be better.
I'd go 7.5 or bigger for your engine.

7.5" Disks are really the minimum you'd want for a 1275 engine. 8.4" like that fitted to a 1275 LS would be better. Depends whether you have 10" wheels or 12" wheels. If running on 12's then I'd go 8.4" if 10's then 7.5" is the biggest you can fit.

7" discs are incredibly thin compared to the cooper s 7.5" ones , and also have smaller pads , a lot of people (specialists included) consider them somewhere between single leading shoe 850 drums and twin leading shoe deluxe onwards drums . The good thing about them though is the hub is the same as the cooper s one so if you happen to get them really cheap you can afford to buy new drive flanges , disc rotors and calipers to make some really good brakes .

i've heard 7inch discs are worse than single leading shoe drums. my 850 has single leading and they pull up well. but i'd get 7.5's. probly easier to get parts for too

i used them on my 1964 mini cooper race car, fitted with a 1275 race motor.
They worked well with metal king pads
I think the earlier 997 set up were worse than the 998 items
Just make sure the discs are not thinner than standard as i have seen worn ones only 3mm thick.

another point that was not said in descussion is that disk brakes do not need adjustment unlike drum setups. A set of cooper disks that are operating, would stop better and allot safer than a set of clubman drums which are only 60% correct (because you don't know how or cannot be bothered adjusting them regularly)

I had them on my cooper, with the addition of a lockheed booster they stopped very well really. Faded after a little too much spirited driving, but I liked them anyway cos of the low maintenance. No problems in traffic, just not so good on a race track or screaming banzai stops from 150 (fade by the time you pass 80).

Loved them anyway cos they were quirky and easy to maintain.

All garage work involves equal measures of enthusiasm, ingenuity and a fair degree of irresponsibility.

I fitted them (997 ones modded for 998 pads) on my 76 ClubbyMatic, with Ferodo Metal pads and an S servo, it stopped pretty well. Definitely better than drums, and self adjusting too.
Only prob back then was buying decent pads here in Oz. I used to keep the backing plates and get them rebonded.
New 7" rotors were NLA but are available again.
