Post subject:  Rebuilt engine with RE13

Hi guys,
I fired up my totally rebuilt S engine (hasn't been going for years) and 22G333 gearbox last night. Everything is working nicely and the engine has a heap of grunt. I have found the RE13 cam to be possibly a little bumpy as 30 mph in top is a problem but it might settle when the engine frees up a little. Thanks for all the help guys, especially Tony E who packed and posted me a 3 synchro S gearbox to NZ.

Now I have to learn to go slow while I run it in, how does one do that in a Cooper S?

Regards
Al

Why go slow when you run it in?

Hi Smac,
I like to keep the revs below 6000, that is only 100 mph. 8)

do a search for running in a engine on here ...

my advice is drive it smoothly , don't thrash it and drive it well.

Can't have the best of both worlds fellas! you want power, you gotta sacrifice a bit of low down grunt. It ain't that bad and it's worth it for the boogie ;)

Agreed... in the 1132 it was a nice kick when she got on cam.

It should get on cam before that, what rocker clearance are you running?
Use .016" for stock rockers, .018"-.020" for 1.5 hi-lift ones.
This is what GR recommends.
If you think that's a lot, my RE282 with 1.5 rockers runs .022" inlet and .024" exhaust, and no, it ain't noisy.

Hi Doc

16 thou as recomended by GR..

Tha cam does come in a lot earlier but 3,000 rpm was an easy reference and the cam is definatley in at 3k.. My rev counter has packed a sad and i need to take it apart and fix it.

I don't have a problem with the cam other than wanting to flaw it. not a good thing for and engine that has less than 50k on the clock.

Once the engine is run in it will certianly be a weekend warrior

Cheers

Hi B,
I have no noticeable idler noise at idle, but everything is new there. My engine will pull away from 1500 smoothly but it is quite jerky at a steady 30 mph in top. It seems to be getting better and maybe I'm getting used to it too and Graham mentioned that it might be a bit lumpy with the twin 1.5" SU's. It isn't bad and it really grunts to 6500, when I gave up because of the new engine. It feels like it would pull a little further, maybe 7000. I'm pretty happy with that.

Al

Check your jetting. Mine was lumpy under 2500 but now it's OK (not like when she's at 3000+ but driveable never the less...

Hi Lillee,
The jetting was fine with the old Clubman GT engine, it might be out a little now but the plan is to have a dyno tune done once I've got a few miles up. I'm certain it is improving, probably as the engine frees up a little.

Yeah that could be it. Get it dyno tuned and it should run alot smoother.

If it is still too cammy, set the rocker clearance to 17 thou and see how you go. You can go to 18 thou too which will make it less cammy but will hurt performance somewhat...
