What causes chrome pitting?

Twice in the past I have put some bumper bars in excellent condition into dry storage, only to pull them out a year or so later with fine pitting all over them.

poor quality chroming...

i remember there's some cheap bullet mirrors from asianistan that seemed to bubble up by the time they arrived...

i'm sure the engineers will have more to say on it.. bonding and alloys and the like.. :)

I've been given two different reasons from two reputable sources , one is moisture from the atmosphere getting in while the plating is drying out on a microscoppic level (could explain why they don't pit when in the weather but as soon as stored they do) and another was imperfections in the metal underneath or the plating "sweating" or leaching out . Both parties swore by their reason so apart from that I have no idea except the one who thought it was atmospheric moisture coated his things in a smear of grease before storage and they came out great .

Was there no stainless trims in GTs like the Coopers?

When i stored these, I bought some greaseproof paper and a can of WD40. I was going to lube and wrap them....but thought nah, waste of time.

Damn it..... wish I just did it.
