which one of these would work better for my stocko 998cc with 1 1/2SU?

a ramflow (dome 360 degree inlet)? or a chrome pancake one (360 degree inlet)?

i'm guessing they'd both do about the same.... pritty much no difference.

but what about compared to my stocko black plastick one?... pritty much no difference?

I would bet that the stock filter would work better than the others under all conditions, (Winter, Summer, wet, dry, etc.) on a stock engine.

Buying those sort of filters for a standard motor is pretty much like buying gourmet Seafood platter catfood. It appeals to the owner more than the cat.

Which air filter you use is purely aesthetic - you are not going to suddenly unlease those trapped 100 horses.

yeah for a stock motor there's nothing wrong with the standard paper filter IMO. it'll also more than likely filter better than a ramflo or the like...

You can get aftermarket (eg K&N, Unifilter) filters that go inside the standard plastic case, and give more HP on a stock motor than the Bling ones you mention.

Kev , is it still acceptible to put some extra holes in the sides of the plastic filter housing to reduce restriction or has that one been proven wrong as well ? I remember going nuts with a hilesaw on my first mini's(a clubbie) air cleaner casing to get a better airflow after reading it in an ancient mini tuning book ...

eg K&N

Expect to pay big money for one of these.. I was quoted $130.00..

Have a read of this.. http://www.gr8website2.com/calverst/CC110F.htm then go to "Fuel" and then Air filtration K&N Air cleaner test.

I did that to mine, fitted a Unifilter filter and it has no problems getting air into the 1.75 SU..

so basically what i said. no difference.

that chrome pancake sure looks nice though, but i gots no cash for things that look nice.

but this cutting holes in the plastic one sounds interesting, the filter in there at the momnet has a metal holy surround that gives it... something i'm not sure.

would cutting holes in the stocko one help?

Short answer - yes

But again your not going t notice a difference !!

You may if your original filter is clagged and blocked and you put a new one on - BUT _ if both equal then ?????

looks like i need to save my dough for a new head.

anyone know of a good place to take a 998 head to? what exactly do they do to it to make it better?

All they do to the head is smooth out the ports so that the air can flow through faster. When the head is cast it is rough in the runners and as the air flows through the roughness slows the air velocity down - a port and polish helps to eliminate this (depending on how many hours you want invested in it to smooth it out). The shape of the runners is also modified a bit to improve air flow.

Well it depends what you want.
Graham Russell is Da Man when it comes to A series heads.
However a stock 998 head is so restrictive in standard form than any dill with a Black and Decker, some mounted stones or carbide burrs, and a bit of nous can get a worthwhile improvement.
To see what is involved first and maybe have a go yourself, I'd get either of David Vizard's 2 books-
How to Modify Your Mini,
Tuning BL's A series engine.

Would be interesting to find out the price of a unifilter replacement for standard air filter box's, both 1.25" (same as Cooper S air box) and 1.5".

true or false, head work can be the most expensive part of working on an engine, it all depends on how far you want to go
