Post subject:  Question regarding originality

Just wondering if any of the original early cooper and cooper s came with a wooden dash as standard?

:(
No.
But you could buy a wooden dash as an aftermarket accessory. They came with either one large hole for the speedo or with an additional two holes for the extra Cooper gauges.
Had one in an 850. You could also buy a stick on padded dash but that was pretty useless.

It was a modification that was and still is done to hust about all mini's, just to tart it up a bit. You could buy it as a dealer option, but not a factory option. Doesn't really matter if you want one, put one in.

Cheers

Thanks for your help, I have a mate who is looking into buying a "totally original" cooper s. Does having a wooden dash make it any less original?

It's easy to remove if that's what he wants. I'll probably get crucified by the purists for saying this but in my opinion if it's a daily driver you're better off with a clubby or 850 in good nick and customising it to your hearts content, without the constraint of keeping it original you can end up with a mini that performs better and is a lot more comfortable and fun for the same price if not less than a restored Cooper S.
If it's an investment he's after with the intent of only driving it on rare occasions the Cooper S is the way to go.

Yep i agree, there are so many great mini's
out there, and a cooper s is just so common
thses days. how often fo you you see a mint
850 (dorothy), mint clubman/s (JAM to be)
and Elmo (1 of 500) and even your matic??

i have lots of respect for the cooper as it really
made the mini legend inthe motoring field etc,
so i think they have a spot in all our hearts, but they
are a bit common due to all the replicas around and it
has taken a bit of the edge off.

(id have a gt clubby any day of the week over any coopers)
