Post subject:  welder for birthday... questions?

Hey guys,
I am thinking about getting a welder for my birthday and was wondering what you reccommend.

I will be using it for small jobs, nothing to crazy.
I was thinking a gas mig at about 125 amps (is that the right word?)
Is there a brand I should try to get?
Any other suggestions?
I will hopefully starting an 8 week short course at night school ( tafe) in april so...

Hey floss, buy a good MIG setup and then drop it down to me and I will teach you how to use it..

I will then look after it like it was my own....

Floss.

Im a fair welder not a pro by anymeans but I can weld.... With a small welder I realy struggle. I have one that is about 120 amps I think and I cant get a good weld out of it, its driveing me crazy. They just weld different to real welders lol.. Basically get the biggest one you can afford and go from there.

I'm a welder by trade (among other things).
Many of the little ones are toys, they have limited Volts selection and power, and the cheapest welding guns and leads the maker could find.
You do get what you pay for.

I bought a S/H Kemppi one for $450 years ago, it's around 120A but welds lots better than the cheapies do- new they used to be $2000.

If you can afford it, the best 240V ones I have used are the WIA 150S, and the Lincoln SP170. Industrial quality machines. But both are over $1,000 now.

I have a Liquid Arc (same as the Lincoln) and tips are cheap & easy to get.

They are over the $1k mark new, but you would be better off getting the best second hand machine you can for your $$$ than a new cheapie

I bought a cheapie and will upgrade to a decent one for my next project. Whilst it was only OK for the thin stuff, it was rubbish for the thicker stuff as the voltage control was hit and miss.

Save the money and get a decent one to begin with.

yeah it sounds like the case. My gf dad can get them cheaperthrough work so it should be a bit cheaper. I dont know how he does it but i dont want to or need to ask so I dont.

I will see what he can get and how much and let you kids know so that you can steer me in the right direction if that is ok with you all.

yeah.....or there is that.

I am a bit bigger than you and might fight back though. You have bigger and more sticks where you are though.

If I get one I will bring it round for you to have a play with and show me how not to weld my face off if you want. If you are a good boy I will let you see my ugly bitch of a mini.

Got a cheapie here and it is again ok with the thin metal but really struggles with thicker stuff(nearly set fire to the dog yesterday...lmao)and spatters all over the place. Just cant seem to get the volts on the nose...and sticky rods really piss me off(damn supercrap!!)

I am off - going to buy my air compressor for my birthday...lol. I am a 21 year old trapped in a 38yo body...lmao

Happy birthday too floss - hope you get(buy!!)what you want...lol
