I am currently stripping back my 66 Delux, I am up to removing the engine. I know of two methods of removal; 1. Lift engine out 2. Drop engine and lift body over. What is the best/easiest method for hydrolastic suspension minis? Simon |

I dunno about the hydrospastic, but if you are doing a full resto the subframe will have to come out anyway. I would lift the body up and over. |

it is easier to take the engine out first, then the subframe. Besides if you take out the subframe you can't roll the car around unless you have a trolley or put it back in. If it is going to a paint shop they will insist it be rolling. Cheers Aaron |

Just pull it out the top, means removing the bonnet though. Yeah u can still roll the car around then. Can be difficult if the subframe and the car dont seperate easily. Just get an engine crane or block and tackle and lift it out. Just watch the diff on the bulkhead as it comes up. |

Even with the front subframe and motor out u can still move it around, just lift it up since the rear wheels are still on, The body isn't that heavy. even more maneuverable? since you can just turn it around. |

I had to make this decision...Hydro suspension too. I took the engine out of the top. Didnt take very long, and was pretty easy to do, and it was my first time taking anything of the sort out. Just remember to disconnect your starter cable before pulling the motor up unlike i did  Ended up having to cut the damn thing

I have a trolley so moving it around won't be that difficult. I am attempting  a full resto, so I want to clean up the subframes and under car.

I've done it both ways, but prefer to lift the motor out first. With the motor sitting on the subframe it is very poorly balanced and won't roll worth a damn, because the tie rods are off. And sometimes the subframe is a bit reluctant to come out, due to body damage or whatever. Both method do work. Try em both...

I totally disagree - taking the subframe out as a unit is way easier - undo the U bolts from the steering rack so it comes away from the body, and put your trolley jack under the front of the subframe before you start lifting the body so the motor doesn't tip forwards. I even leave the wheels on - then you lift the body, and just roll the subframe out did you know that the world record for a complete engine swap (drive in - drive out) is something like 19 seconds that was done by a navy crew on a moke - they woulda had a complete subframe including wheels |

once you run the brake lines around the subframe instead of on it, then bolt the rack to the subframe instead of the body, and use something to balance the whole thing it will be easier to lift the body over every time. |
